My personal opinion would have to be Eric Brann of Iron butterfly he was only 17 when they released In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida and it stayed in the top forty for a whole year how many seventeen yearold guitarists have had an accomplishment like that honestly.

Steve Clark - def leppard. (deceased) very melodic, tasteful lead guitar.

I can't believe some people are claiming Satriani and Hendrix are underrated. You're talking about two of the most acclaimed guitarists of all time.

let's see, There's Mark Shelton of Manilla Road, no ones heard of them outside of Europe and Wichita, Kansas tho...

Jason Becker is another big one, he did a lot of good work in the late 80s with Marty Friedman before Marty joined Megadeth cause they were basically best buds. but then Jason got ACL and got paralyzed from the neck down so people lost interest in him. Very sad

Robin Trower seems to get no mention anywhere even tho he was one of the few guitarists after Hendrix to combine Soul/funk and Blues Rock so well. If theres anything you can have against the guy it's that he played a little too similarly to Hendrix actually, but i think Trower was a better songwriter in many respects.

I skimmed through this thread and I can't see any SRV nods! Most of the people that actually seem to know about him don't underrate him, although it's kinda a shame he got forgot for the most part outside of his contemporaries after he died in that helicopter crash.

thats all i got for now

my pick is Andy Summers of The Police for underrated. He can wail, but is within the confines of a group dynamic.

umm...yes, john butler anyone? i can't say i've looked at top guitarist lists a whole lot or anything like that but i never hear his name when people talk about great guitarists. check out this song by him: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6VAkOhXIsI0 its called ocean. the sound gets a bit out of sync with the video, but w/e
in my opinion, this could be the best acoustic instrumental i've ever heard. absolutely beautiful and at the same time if you watch him while he plays it you can tell he puts every ounce of emotion he can into it. and it has some amazing build up. incredible. i get chills every single time i listen to this song.

his style is my favorite to play: some good ol' finger lickin finger pickin and open tunings

oh and i forgot to say Tim Reynolds...most freakin ridiculous acoustic guitarist ever. period. For those that don't know he plays with Dave Matthews at alot of their concerts. i have NEVER heard anyone actually manage to shred on an acoustic...but he most definitely pulls it off.

Tim Sult from Clutch. Not a shredder, if that is what you are looking for, but definitely hits the right **** with every tune. Also, Johnny Winter. If you doubt me, check out Still Alive and Well. And Hendrix. Just listen to Drivin' South on BBC Sessions and if you don't come away somewhat humbled then you need to go back home, boy.
