Hi, I'm new here, so go easy!
I'm a student reading Software Engineering and I'm building a program that
listens to you play guitar and gives feedback. I'm trying to qualify the
need for the project and I'm desperate to track down some sort of official
figures for just how many guitarists there are on planet Earth, or maybe
how many guitars at least? Can't find anything online - anyone got any
ideas? Is there a more popular instrument?

No, the Guitar is it.. the best... nothing else compares but the
tuba...Kidding
Musicians make about 5% of the popualtion maybe a little more... This is
musicians in general not just guitarist.
A quick search in google (cia.gov) for how many people in the world.
