Hi,
Whilst im not necessarily new at playing guitar, when i was learning i
skipped alot of things i really shouldnt have (couldnt afford lessons at
the time, ho-hum) and now im trying to learn theory to get a better
understanding of the instrument.
Im not really looking for a quick way to learn everything about theory, but
more of an easier way to understand it, if that makes sense.
So with that said, can anyone recommend any books/websites/dvds that i can
have a look at to learn the basics and beyond of theory.
Thanks. ____________________ Excuse me, is your refrigerator running? Because if it is, it probably runs

Yup... Music theory is NOT at all hard when it is taught in the right
order.
I used to take guitar lessons, but it just wasn't panning out for me. So I
stopped. Then a couple weeks ago I was thinking how I wish I was able to
continue with lessons because I really wanted to understand theory.
Well then I thought - it's 2006 we have the technology now days there HAS
TO BE a DVD course out there.
So I did some looking... I came across this site:
www.absolutelyunderstandguitar.com
I was skeptical 'casue it's kind of infomercial like... Well I e-mailed
Scotty and he called me the next day. We had a talk over the phone. I felt
a little better about it, so I ordered the course.
I COULD NOT HAVE BEEN HAPPIER!!!
I know all about music theory now. I understand Scales, Modes, Voicing,
Intervals, Inversions, Chord Theory... etc.
I'm able to read guitar books and actually UNDERSTAND what they're talking
about!
It's 32 hours on DVD. I watched the DVDs one after another for a few weeks.
I retained just about EVERYTHING he taught!
That's how awesome of a teacher he is!
Now that I know how music works, I know WHAT I need to practice. I'm
advancing SO fast now...
So ya... I can't say enough about this program. My Grandfather who has been
playing guitar for 50 years bought it because I was talking to him over the
phone and teaching him stuff he NEVER KNEW! So he got it for himself.
There are also a couple books I have that teach exactly what the DVDs do -
but they're harder to understand
Everything about Guitar Chords
Everything about Guitar Scales
I had them collecting dust on my shelf 'cause I didn't understand it ...
After I watched the DVDs... I read through both books and it ALL made sense
to me.
I hope that helps
Good luck

Thanks for that info man, ill check out the site.
I think its probably better for me to watch DVD's to try and understand
rather than read books... which i find a little boring and most of the info
goes over my head, lol.

| I didnt buy this course (at least not yet anyway) cause after reading it
again it did seem a little like it was the owner's own review of his
course. ____________________ Excuse me, is your refrigerator running? Because if it is, it probably runs

Actually, there are oodles (what a funny word) of web sites that give free
music theory lessons. You won't be learning everything there is to know
about music, but it won't cost an arm and a leg (and once you learn about
Neapolitan 6ths, you'll realize that it's time to leave the nest, so to
speak.) If you need help beyond that, I think brian said he went to
Berkeley. I'll have to read the user intros again. |

Hi. I'm new to this forum, but I just wanted to say that I'm also looking
for a book or something that can summarize the basics of guitar playing.
I've been going to an instructor, and while that's all well and good, I
still feel like I'm missing a piece. I think I'll talk it over with my
instructor and see what she says. If she comes back with any good advice
I'll be sure to post it here. In the meantime, if anyone has any other
suggestions, please post Thanks! ____________________ J.G.

Um yeah. My question was does anyone have a suggestion for a good video,
DVD, or CD that has helped them practice chords and finger placements, and
that contains some good beginner fingerpicking songs? I guess I should have
made that clearer before. Thanks! |
