Obviously the title says what I am about to say and all that it includes, but here I go anyways...

Well I decided that I wanted to pick up electric guitar, I love my rock music, whether im happy, sad, mad, upset, I can always listen to rock! Which is of course good if you want to pick up the electric guitar. But my main problem is getting a guitar, and getting lessons...

A friend...more of an aquitance, got a very cheap electric guitar and an amp (10 watts I believe) for 120$, which is a good deal (Ive seen a few for that price on ebay), but im left handed!! What can you do? I could learn to play righty...(I really dont want to, my left hand is so much more coordinated), get a right handed guitar and string it left handed (But i recently got an email saying that when he did this, the guitar was shaped so it would not allow him to hold onto it properly), or get a left handed guitar (which are a lot of the time not as well made, and/or pricer). WHAT 2 DO!?

My next problem comes with lessons....Im not 100% sure this is what I want, and it wont be until I try playing for a little while. I really dont wanna drop 120-200$ on a cheap guitar and amp to find out in a month or two im not really into it. I'd really want lessons frm a place that could supple me a left handed guitar and could simply stop by to play (granted I couldnt play or practise as home).

I'm not sure what I should do, maybe someone out there could give me some advice!

I did a quick search and didnt see anything, sorry if these questions are asked a lot, but please bear with me...Althuogh I can see how annoying it could be with people asking "What kinda guitar should i buy!?"

If your left handed and you feel more comfortable with a left handed guitar then I would buy a left handed guitar.

As for lessons I might just buy some books or tapes/videos to learn from at first and then take lessons after a year or so that way you are not wasting your money on lessons...knowing how to play before lessons is the best in my mind...you will just struggle to learn if you take lessons right away...you need time to get your fingers and hands used to playing then you will get the most out of lessons.

I would try and learn your favorite songs at first as to keep you interested in guitar before I do anything...you can take lessons at anytime after you know how to play...I would learn to read tabulature right away and you can buy thousands and thousands of songs which you learn at home...Also learning songs can teach you a lot about guitar playing...I recommend lessons however just not right away...learn to play some first...learn all your major and minor chords...learn as much as you can before lessons.

There is a theory that a left handed player playing a right handed guitar will have better controll when making fret shapes or playing riffs.
Coordination with your right hand will just take some practise, most right handed guitarists have trouble making chord shapes but find it real easy to strum the string, in theory you should have it the other way round.
My freind Leigh is left handed but plays right handed, it works for him.

Oh, and Noel (loudmouth) Gallagher from Oasis is left handed too if it makes any difference.
If you have any taste in music, it won't

Well I was actually getting to the point of wanting a used left handed guitar, although I think that thats asking a bit much.

Ive found some cheap left handed strat style guitars online and stuff for about 120$ with an amp and the cable, but theres no telling how its gonna feel, or how well its gonna play (I read a bit on cheap guitars, how some of their tuning nobs dont stay in thes ame place)
etc...

Im still considering all my options though, Im not sure if theres any sort of used musical place here where I live, maybe some pawn shops...but id really rather not go 2 a pawn shop

I buy and sell on auctions all the time...I can help ya

Send me a PM about any question you may have regarding buying a guitar.

I would avoid the tremlo style bridge and go for something more solid for your first guitar.

You may like the look of a fender type guitar however for your money I would buy something like this...

after visiting the stores around my city I think I have decided to simply learn to play right handed. Which would clarify many things, but then at the same time my decision for a guitar is still a mystery...

But while i was out, i visited this place called Rock Bottow, the people there were really helpful and had a used left handed

"Samick Series 10" Jackson stle guitar. Im not sure on all the details and such, but anyone know about this? it was only 120$ used, and the guy told me that it probably retailed for around 400$ but that he wasnt sure.

But I havnt even started learning yet...so learning right handed may not be such a problem...but i still dont know wut to do! THanks spider, ill definately drop u an e-mail

Well, since you already got it figured out... then cool. You could just take a right handed guitar and turn it upside down without restringing it like Hendrix did in the beginning. It may be harder, but you'd be the only guy in town that could do it... I like Telefreak's theory of a leftie playing a fret easier, and I think it would work. I have the hardest time in the world playing chords and stuff, and I'm constantly just trying to find shortcuts to make it easier. Thank God I'm a frontman... so guitar's not my main trade

I'll tell ya guy........Im a lefty and have been playing guitar since i was 6 years old. My advice is to save up your money and buy a little better quality guitar. Most players who start out with a cheapie wind up getting disgusted and give up before they ever learn to play.Thick necks, bad setups, high string action and poor electronics are all discouageing things to deal with as a newbie. If i was starting all over, the lowest priced ,nice playing guitar that i would buy is an Ibanex GRX 20.....At about $220,its easy to play and sounds decent.it has a nice thin neck and usually comes out of the box with a decent setup. Its also easy to hot rod if you decide to do so ,after you get where you can play better.
