Hello. I'm actually somewhere in between half newbie and half not newbie,
but I've only played acoustic guitars and am looking to spend somewhere up
to $650 on a new electric guitar. My question is: are there any
models/manufacturers etc that make shorter, thinner necked guitars that
aren't, like, super pricey?
I'd also like something with both humbucker & single coil pickups, though
I'd prefer humbuckers if there was no choice. Anyone have any ideas? I
played a vintage jaguar at the guitar shop the other day and it was real,
real nice, but I can't afford a $1500 guitar.
Finally, I'm talking to someone who has 2 modified strats with humbuckers &
single coil pickups for sale and I'm going to go play with them tomorrow I
think, but do you have any thoughts on what I should look for when buying
used? (I know straight neck, check the frets for wear, check everything for
nicks, cracks, dings, etc). I like how gibson/epiphones look a lot more
than how fenders look, but they also seem to generally be bigger and while
I'm not a short girl, I do have tiny girl hands and girly girl arms. I
guess that doesn't matter as much as how it sounds though. Thanks in
advance for any advice. |

Strats, in my experience, have a smaller neck than most Gibsons and
Epiphones. Depending on how long you have been playing, your hands will
still stretch and you will become more comfortable playing. You say you
have played an acoustic guitar which generally have thicker necks than
strats. The "modified" strats you are going to look at are most likley
standard Fat strats which usually go for about $400. But since they are
used you should be able to bargain it down. Check to make sure their is no
loose hardware and everything feels tight. Hope this helps somewhat.

Hi Amym...
why don't you try a peavey wolfgang?
It's a smaller guitar with two humbuckers.
You can only find them used, around $650, though!
Good luck...

I agree. I got my Wolfgang for $350 at a pawn. My experience is that
Gibson's have good low actio, but Fender types have thinner necks...
I once went to this blues bar in NZ for a battle of the bands. Late in the
night this older Maori dude (who was sitting just next to me earlier) got
up with his band and JAMMMED on an epiphone junior guitar. This guy must
have been mid 50's (hard years) and blew (blue) the house away. Hendrix,
Zep etc.... I will never look down at a small scale guitar. If that is
what your hands require -> go for it. Go go go. It is the groove that is
important, not the look....... |
