Hey guys,

I am learning on an acoustic guitar.

When I press the strings on the fretboard, should I be using the pad of my fingers, or the finger tips?... :giggly:

Hi there!

It depends on what chords your playing. In general you play with your finger tips. If you playing chords that require 2 or more strings to sound with the same finger then the pad on your finger is needed.

Hope this helps.

Bar chords require using more than your finger tips and other chords also...For example

E----5-----------------------------------
B----5--------5--------7-------------------
G----6--------5--------7--------------------
D----7--------5--------7-----------------
A----7--------------------------------
E----5-------------------------------------

In example above the all 555 and the 777 can be played with three fingers using the tips however I usually just bar the three notes with index finger...or ring finger...I even use my middle finger to bar all three notes...and of course if your hands are big and your baby finger is double jointed you can bar all three notes with your pinky.

I?d say that if you are just begining start using the figertips because it?ll later help you to get more speed, which will make you play esaier. When playing scales like the pentatonic, I personally recomend you to always use your fingertips. Later on you will start to learn some new techniques in which you will have to use one finger to cover at least two strings, but scince you are just starting try using your figertips almost all the time.
Rock on!
Good luck!

How do you learn the notes though? Is there an easy way to understand what the notes are and where?
