i plan on eventually getting a schecter c-1 classic, its beautiful has great tone and is superb value. but i dont want to get rid os the squire strat i have now, it wouldnt get much money anyway.
ive enjoyed learning how to tinker with this guitar, i got a huge repair book that teaches you how to do anything with the guitar. i got my truss rod perfect and the action, im currently perfecting the intonation. its awesome! but after i get my schecter, i want to work on my strat and tweak it to my liking. the schecter is more of a lp tone, so i want my strat to have a great twangy vintage sound but also be perfect for eruption-style licks. so im thinking i should do the following, starting at the top and working down: put in locking tuners, get a new and better quality nut, replace the entire neck from my maple neck rosewood fretboard to maple and maple and upgrade from 21 to 22 frets, rip out the 3 pups and put in only 2 replacements in mid and bridge position, rewire those so each has a separate tone nob, and put in a floyd rose tremolo.

i would appreciate ur advice/opinions about which locking tuners to use, where to get the neck, which fretboard radius to use, how big the frets should be, which pups to use i like seymour duncan but i dont know specifically which ones, and the whole floyd rose issue. even if i should do this at all!

thanks so much, hope to hear from you all

it sounds like your planning on putting large amounts of money into a $150 guitar. i think you could probably buy a new guitar with the same sound that your trying to get from your strat for less than youll have to put into your strat. plus (please dont take offense) you might think your a guitar technician but when it comes time to work on your guitar youll mess it up horridably and hae wasted alot of money, i dont know you maybe your quite skilled in the guitar maintenance/repair area i dont know my advice to you though would be to not do it.

If you can get all the replacement parts for free or dirt cheap I would work on the guitar...It is the only way to learn...If you screw up a cheap guitar than who cares...However why spend more than what the guitar is worth...Are you are basically going to use the body as a frame...I am buying parts for a guitar Im making from scratch...I think thats the way to go...However Im still studying on this issue and I am not rushing into anything with eyes wide shut...Good luck to you and all your repairs and or creations...Youll never learn if you dont try...Im still wondering if you fixed the tremlo from your other post. Thanks

I think CrissC is right. It is like a car shop around try alot and buy something someone else has spent the cash. There are no shortages of good guitars on the planet. Doing anything up will always cost you more but if you want the satisfaction of trying something yourself dont go into it with thought that you will save money. You just wont. But I wish luck.

to straighten out past posts, the book i got taught me how to do tons of stuff. i got my truss rod just right, my action is good so it is as low as possible and with minimal buzzing and it matches my fretboard radius, and my intonation is pretty much perfect. once all that was done i gave the tremelo a go, and it went way out of tune. i was able to adjust the springs to make it less cumbersome to use, but it still ruined my tuning. i think it might be something with the nut which is low quality and maybe in the string saddle thingies on the headstock, and it could be slack caught up in the bridge behind the bridge saddles. my book tells me lots f technical stuff that canhelp, which i could do im not too bad with the stuff and my dad is knowledgable of tools, but frankly i dont think ill be satisfied witha classic tremelo, id like the reliablility of the floyd rose.

as far as your comments on it being a sort of money pit, to an extent i agree. it might well be more expensive. but the thing to keep in mind is this wont be any time soon. not until i get my schecter. and even then it will be a long process. i havent totaled up an average price for everything, if its way too big ill scratch the idea, but if its just a little expensive id like to go through with it. its kinda sentimental value, my first guitar and i love it, i dont wanna get rid of it. but i know its not that great, so i wanna make it better. and a lot of these upgrades would be done in a shop not by me, i dont think i could do the whole pickup thingy.

can u guys suggest to me any guitars that have pretty much all the specs im looking for? im not a huge fan of ibanez, so stick away from them if u could

thanks

the schecter is great, it will be my "les paul" equivalent guitar. my strat, whtever it turns out to be, will be my trem guitar.

ive been thinking and i agree upgrading my squire out the wazoo will be expensive and it will always be part squire. ive been browsing ebay, and a used american strat can be aquired for 400 to 500. id get one with a maple neck like i want, and i am assuming it would have a satisfactory nut and tuners. all id need to so then is put in my own pickups and a floyd rose and id be in business. that might be cheaper and less effort, and will probably result in a better guitar.

gimme your thoughts and thanks for the ones uve already given me
