I'm just getting used to electric guitar, but I'm completely clueless about
distortion pedals and the different types, effects, and what to use them
for! I've never
even worked with them before. Please help me! |

What do you want to know? Which one to buy? How they work?
For the first 5 years that I played guitar, I used only a DOD American
distortion pedal and a sustain pedal.
Later on, I moved to a modeling pedal(Digitech RP 100). This gave me mucho
effects at less a cost than some single effect pedals, however it sucks to
gig with, as you can only cycle up or down chronologically, not able to
save to banks.
That brought me to my current setup for pedals:
Digitech RP3
Jim Dunlop Cry Baby Wah
Danelectro Free Speech Voice Pedal(recent addition and more for
shits and giggles than anything else)
That's it aside from my switchable effects on the amp itself.
If you're just getting started, I would say that you should look into
something like an RP 50 or 100, as it will allow you to play with many more
effects than you'd otherwise be able to afford. From the money I saved you
in your other thread, you can do that now!
thanks,

Hi,
I would recommend a good overdrive pedal (Boss Super Overdrive), a
compressor (Boss CS 3, or if you can find it an old Ibenez Tube Screamer),
and a digital delay (Boss DD-3). I'm not selling Boss over anything else,
it's just that is what I am most familiar with.
A wah and fuzz are cool too. A very cool fuzz is a Vox Fuxx Tone Bender
from the 60's, but they are hard to come by. I have tried alot of the new
ones (Fuzz Face, Octiva Fuzz), and they just don't get it. I swear by a
Vox Clyde McCoy. I have an orginal and a new re-issue. The re-issue is
pretty close, and a lot cheaper!!
Here's my understanding of these effects:
Overdrive is just a gain setting that is set higher than the amp or pedal
chip can handle, therefore creating a slightly distorted sound. Sometimes a
clean channel on your amp will become overdriven when you crank it all the
way up.
Fuzz eliminates the highest highs and /or lowest lows of the wave form, so
the sound is clipped or distorted.
Compression makes every note come out at the same volume. It softens the
notes you play hard, and amplifies the notes you play softly. Kind of like
fitting 8 inches of water thru a 4 inch pipe. It also adds a lot of
sustain to the notes.
A wah is just a potentiometer (sp?) that flips between high and low freq.
You can hear the effect just by taking the tone on your guitar and moving
it quickly after hitting a power chord.
Part of the fun is buying stuff, trying it out, trading it in on other
stuff....
There is probally a 12 Step group for pedal junkies like me
somewhere....
Good luck,
Bill
