If your just getting started I would grab a copy of Cakewalk,Soundforge etc.... get a good sound card and your all set.

Plug into your sound card and start recording

Sound blaster live is a good start for a sound card.

When you get that going there's more of course...

You sure can! All you need to do is get a mixer and run from the outs to the ins of the soundcard. You can record the band live or do it one track at a time. I recorded 2 instrumental guitar albums this way. it it sound pretty **** good. I used to own ADats but the hard disk recording is way cleaner and more in depth sound wise.

You could also get a digital recorder like what Tascam,Fostex makes........

We sell them here!

A mixer ........ mixes the separate channels coming in before putting it out to a P.A. system, very handy for live gigs. You can also output it to a recording system.

A digital recorder is more of an all-in-one system, that can mix the inputs and record it to it's installed media.

I prefer using a mixer and going out to a separate recording system. I've found the digital recorders that I've worked with are limited, overly confusing and expensive.

thanks,
