Why do I have to learn scales to play lead? I have been playing scales for months and still can't play any lead. Furthermore I have never heard a guitarist rip into a hot solo and start playing the pentatonic scale! It seems to me that one has to simply familiarise ones self to the fretboard. Are there any simple standard "lead licks" to practice like chords?

learning the scales, modes is very important especially if you want to be a well rounded guitarist. Improvising over chord changes is a good example. If you know your scales/modes you will be able to rip out solos with one take and jam with anyone with confidence. Guitarist that don't know always sound like they trying to find the right note.
