We get this question alot from beginners. You can break down your selection into 2 main guitar types. (1) Being the Gibson Les Paul and (2) Being the Fender Stratocaster. Of course there's more guitars out there like Paul Reed Smith, ESP, G&L,Hamer, Jackson, but they are second generation guitars as we could call them. When you think of a fat tone with crunch the first guitar that comes to mind is the Gibson Les Paul humbuckers. For them sparkly clean tones the Fender Stratocaster aka.. Strat, single coils come to mind.
Paul Reed Smith is kinda the two in one package, but lacks it's own character. When you hear a Gibson or a Fender you know what they are right away. There have been a couple guitar manufactures that have come out with guitars that interestingly enough is pretty much Fender and Gibson. G&L stands for George Fullerton and Leo Fender. Leo Fender and George started Fender. This is a great guitar and is built just like the old fenders. I think they even use the same old templates Leo Fender developed in the the mid 50's. Some of the G&L Models include the George Fullerton model,The Legacy,Asat etc...
Leo Fender also started the company Music Man before G&L. The Heritage Guitar Company had the same idea, they were pretty much a original Gibson made in Kalamazoo Michian. For a little history on the humbucker, Seth Lover was the first to come out with the humbucker design. His idea was to put 2 single coils together to cancel out the hum you'd normally get out of a single coil. You can still buy the Seth Lover name humbuckers. Also let's not forget the other guitar models like Gibson ES335, ES175... Fender's Mustang,Jaguar etc... In conclusion the Gibson Les Paul and the Fender Strat are the most copied guitars to date.
