Jimi Hendrix Style (Part 2)

brian writes
In the first Jimi Hendrix style lesson ( click here) we showed you how he would utilize his chords and scales. We also came to the conclusion that Hendrix used mostly Pentatonics and Blues scales for his solo's. He also made use of basic chord inversions while interweaving them with blues licks. In this lesson we will take a look at some of Hendrix's trademark chords and licks.

Exampe 1.

Major 9 chord

----7------------
----5------------
----6------------
----7------------
-----------------
----5(T)---------

Hendrix often played the major 9 chord with his thumb on the 6th string (T) and would slide the chord to different positions.

Check out the intro to "Castles made in Sand" where he starts with a F major 9 and slides the chord pattern to up to G, A, Bb, C major 9 and then slides back.

Slide-->
----3-----5-----7----8----10------
----1-----3-----5----6-----8------
----2-----4-----6----7-----9------
----3-----5-----7----8----10------
----------------------------------
----1(T)--3(T)--5(T)-6(T)--8(T)---

Another one of Hendrix trademarks was the use of his thumb while playing a solo or lick. Below is
an example of holding the A on the 6th string while playing a simple blues scale.

----8---5------------------------
-------------8----5--------------
---------------------8--7--5-----
------------------------------7--
---------------------------------
-----5(T)------------------------
Let bass note ring-->

---------------------------------
---------------------------------
----------7-^-(9)-7--5~----------
-------------------------7~------
---------------------------------
-----5(T)------------------------
Let bass note ring-->

The above example is a very common lick Hendrix would use. Hold down the 6th string (A) note
with your thumb (Let Ring). While the bass note is ringing bend the 3rd string 7th fret (D) up to (E)
and release back to D then finish the lick with the 3rd fret 5th string and finally A on the 4th string 7th fret.

If there is one Jimi Hendrix lick that sticks in my mind the most, I would have to say it's the one
where he bends up a note and pre-bends and releases another note at the same time. Very Cool.

Click on the included file attachment below to hear the pre-bend lick

  • (b) = bend
  • (pb) = pre-bend
  • (r) = bend release (if no number after the r, then release immediately)
  • (=) = hold bend; also acts as connecting device for hammers/pulls
