A New trio formed by two British guitar legends and one of Africa?s leading musicians is to headline this summer?s Dundee Guitar Festival, now firmly established as one of the most prestigious events of its kind in Europe. Web is a musical collaboration that features John Williams, one of Britain?s most gifted classical guitar players, the jazz virtuoso John Etheridge and Patrick Bebey, a singer and keyboard player from Cameroon. Their concert at the city?s Caird Hall will be the highlight of this year?s festival which is being staged from 21 to 25 July.
The four-day festival also features Simon Dinnigan, one of the world?s finest classical guitarists, the leading Scottish jazz player Martin Taylor, the rising Croatian star Ana Vidovic, the Polish virtuoso Andrzej Mokry, and a British ensemble, the Tetra Quartet.
The rock guitarist Hugh Burns, who has appeared on stage and on record with artists ranging from Michael Jackson and George Michael to Elton John and Paul McCartney, is also being featured as part of a world class line-up, hailed by the organisers as the strongest bill in the festival?s 13-year history.
This year?s festival also marks the launch of the inaugural Dundee International Guitar Competition, Scotland?s first international competition for classical guitar performance. The competition has attracted a prize fund of ?10,000 to find the best of Britain?s young guitarists.
Allan Neave, the festival?s artistic director, said: "Since 1991, the Dundee Guitar Festival has presented an annual event celebrating the music of the guitar in its many forms. It has grown from an ambitious local project to one of Europe?s most important weeks for the guitar.
"This is probably the strongest bill we have ever had at the Dundee Guitar Festival, and it promises to be a fantastic week of guitar music for all tastes."
The festival organisers have also issued an appeal for support from the local business community to help disadvantaged guitar students receive professional tuition.
They are looking for companies to donate fees to support a bursary initiative to provide financial assistance for people who may not otherwise be able to take advantage of the services the DGF teaching faculty offers. |
