| enigmatic_minstrel writes Welcome to the mystical world of the Oriental Mode. Here is a mode that when used sparingly can sound very moody and exotic. It is the II mode of the Hungarian Minor Scale. Onwards to the formula - 1, b2, 3, 4, b5, 6, b7
So in E Oriental mode we have the following notes E, F, G#, A, Bb, C#, D. Here's some basic patterns to get you started.
E-----------------------------12--13--16--17--18--21--23--24---
B--------------------------------------------------------------
G-------------------6--7--9------------------------------------
D---------6--7--8----------------------------------------------
A--7--8--------------------------------------------------------
E--------------------------------------------------------------
The most practical chord to use this over is E7b5. Remember, if you wish to form a chord progression for this or any mode, decide on the sequence of chords, I II III..etc, then work out what chords can be formed using the notes of the scale. For example if you wanted to go to a D chord, we can see that by deduction we can use it over DmMaj7 because this chord has the notes present in the Oriental Mode.
