Model interchange chords are chords taken from a parallel tonality to use in primary tonality. A good example of this is take the chords from the key of C minor and add them to key of C major. This would be Natural Minor Modal Interchange chords since C minor is your basic natural minor (Aeolian mode). Let's get started with Natural Minor Modal Interchange chords.

  • I-7 = C-7
  • II-7(b5) = D-7 (b5)
  • bIII maj7 = Eb maj 7
  • IV-7 = F-7
  • V-7 = G-7
  • bVI maj7 = Ab maj7
  • bVII 7 = Bb7

Just think now you have 7 more chords that you can spice up your progressions with. You can also do the same with harmonic minor but the most common chords are II-7(b5) and the V7(b9)

Other chords from scales you could include are the melodic minor,Dorian, Phrygian, etc. Note this is just an intro to Model Interchange Chords. Check back for more!
