Assuming you're someone who doesnt know music theory beyond the modes, a few scales and a little bit of the ability to read music, how do you go about writing songs & or solos?
I believe people have their own ways of going about it, I'd like to know how you guys do it and see if it works for me.

Songwriting is a tricky thing to teach...I usually try a few chord progressions...I try not to sing over the chord changes...try to pause and or stop singing over chord changes...this is not a rule however it can spark something and pauses create feeling...you can apply this to lead guitar instead of vocals.

For solos sometimes I just record a crazy solo without any chords in the background...then I like to play chords to the solo trying to find odd chords to fill in the back...this is tough to do however sometimes its the chords behind the lead guitar that create the color and not the solo its self...try it.

Listen to your favorite players and cope licks from them and then do your own thing. Learn a new scale etc... Close your eyes and get a cool groove going you will know what to do next!

Thanks to you too Guitar101, `ll try to employ every input i get.

Many times I hear a melody in my head. Where it comes from, I have no idea. When this happens I usually pick up my guitar and transfer what I was hearing to my fret board.

Other times, I'll be practicing modes or scales or just improvising and I stumble across some ideas.

I dont think you can teach songwriting.
Didnt Mozart say that when he was asked how he composed?
He never had to ask himself how he did it; he just did it.

HEY PSYCHO, I looked at your link to HESS.
MAN! He's a personal friend of mine and a mentor. What a great teacher and guitar player that guy is.
He is currently the head of the Music department at Harper College. He'll be touring with a new band called HolyHell very soon.

PURE GENIUS!!!
