I've never been a big fan but they made a big impact. I watched VH1 behind the music last night on GNR.

Those guys where messed from day one. Leave the drugs alone people.

Drugs are bad people, take it from someone who knows.
I had my long term memory erased by them. Half my childhood and most of the guitar theory I knew, all gone, just say no!

Hello, i am a newbie to this site.looks really cool.
Got a question maybe someone can answer.
I've been playing guitar for 19yrs and i am learning bass now.
I can play the bass like improving like a guitar solo without over doing it,all the way from basic to pulling off some advanced stuff.
the only thing is when i hear a bass player playing with a band it sounds much different.I've always heard the bass is playing more with the drums than anything.I guess i just dont understand bass logic good yet.
My question is how to play bass like a bass player instead of playing bass like a guitar player?or does it really matter?

First Im glad someone is interested in playing bass...I believe that the art of bass playing in rock is gone...If you listen to music from the 50's,60's,70's the bass was a bigger part of music than guitar in my mind...There were good bass players then...I really dont here this anymore...I think the bass needs to be in time or work in some sort of pattern with the bass drum or the kick drum...Also the drums and bass do not want to step on each others toes...You dont want a wild bass riff with a wild drum roll it would sound muddy...They need to feed off each other in this sense...Im sure there is more however I do not play the drums...I play bass and guitar.dont play the bass like guitar.examples

Its hard to explain...play less...Play yet somtimes dont even play while every one is playing and every once in a while accent with a cool bass note or chord...Less is best.Thats what I do anyway...Also the gaps in the song with no bass creates feeling in the song...Same can be said for guitar and vocals...Stops or gaps create feeling...peace

Thanks for the input I think i know what you mean.the bass pl ays with the bass drum where the guitar doesnt.Thats probably the conventional way to play bass.Thats what i need to practice,even though i think both ways are good i just like to understand how everything is set up to work.I really want to be well rounded.

I am a big fan of rock based music,i like all different kinds.I play alot of folk,blues,classic and some new rock.Right now i am learning the bass so i can play in my church band.They are really good.The drumer played shows with jefferson airplane and had zappa intrested in them in the 60's.The guitar player was formerly in lynard sknard (or how ever it's spelled) he was on 3 of there albums.all the other people have very impressive back grounds as well.Just to clairify the drummer had his own band that played shows with jefferson airplane,he wasn't their drummer.So i guess to answer the question i am learning alot of bluesy type funky gospel music.I want to learn alot of different stuff though
