Hey all

I was wondering what people's favourite tones were- who's guitar sound do you like best? What kind of tone do you have/want? Whose do you hate?

I love the edgy tone Al Di meola had on Chick Corea's Return to Forever albums. Satriani's tone is also great, especially on his crystal Planet album. EVH's brown sound too. Santana too.

I cant stand the scratchy sound of bands like White Stripes. Metallica, and most thrash metal stuff sounds pretty awful to me. But maybe thats the point!

anyone else?

I like a full deep chainsaw like tone of ZZ Top, Zakk Wyde etc.. for the rock thing. If it's blues I got to go with SRV,Ian Moore,Buddy Guy,Chris Duarte. If it's jazz I like the king Wes Montgomery,Larry Carlton tone.

I also love Eric Johnson violin like tone..

Listen to G3 the first one with Eric Johnson,Steve Vai and Joe Satriani. Eric just stands our with one note. Via and Satriani sound alot of like. I guess it's the processed sound.

Eric Johnson uses vintage Fender amps, guitars and is well defined.

I know I will get alot of hate mail but I personally can't stand Santana's tone or his playing. He plays flat alot which turns my ears inside out.....ouch

Eddie is cool I will see him in Philadelphia on June 16.......
Can't wait.....

My favourite tone is a Tele through a cranked up Fender Twin.

Or my Tele run throught my Marshall Guv'nor, I never get tired of playing my Tele through that

I'll let you off that Santana remark this time

Buddy Guy has a fantastic sound, really powerful and electric. Far better than clapton's tinny, thin sound!

I've just discovered another tone I dislike, George "big hair, bare chest, big tan" Lynch.

i think I must be the only guitar player who doesnt like Zakk Wylde! I dont like his tone, his music, and his attitude to music is totally wrong. He said he reckon that because Hendrix wouldnt of been able to play Mr Crowely, he cant be the greatest ever. Anyone who can't shred Zakk doesnt rate.

If he had his way, the world would be full of Yngwie's...

Don't worry Enigmatic_minstrel, you're not the only one.
I hate shred heads, Zakk Wylde included.

Like Jan Ackermann once said
"You can teach a monkey to type, but that doesn't mean it will type anything good"

I love the tone I get.I use a 1975 Gibson Les Paul w/Pearly Gates pickups and a 2002 Fender USA Stratocaster w/EMG DG-20 pickup assembly through my mid 80's Marshall JCM 800 and Crate Vintage Club 50 heads through a Gallien Krueger 4x12 w/Celestions and a Mesa 4x12 w/Black Shadow speakers..As for artists tone I love,I'd say Warren Haynes and Billy Gibbons and Angus Young have my favorite tones.
