So what's your opinion on Larry Carltons playing, style.

I personally love his style and approach to the guitar.

I would rate him 4.8 out of 5

Taking jazz guitar and making it simple by 3 or 4 notes chords

For example instead of playing a full A 13 chord
he would play the notes G,C#,F#

-------------
----7-------
----6-------
----5-------
-------------
-------------

or an altered A7 with a Augmented 5 he would play

-------------
----6-------
----6-------
----5-------
-------------
-------------

Again he's approach is very simple and effective

Hi:
Newbie to Guitar Files, but an experienced player and avid Larry Carlton fan. If you're looking for LC material to listen to, skip his "smooth jazz" efforts unless you're into that sort of thing. I'm sure these make a lot of dough for him, but players will appreciate his other stuff. The "Sapphire Blue" CD (2003) is great. Very blues-oriented, jazzy, uptempo. Most of his other recent efforts are a little too mellow for me. For rockers, there's the 2001 Live in Japan w/ Steve Lukather, and the 1993 "Renegade Gentleman." If you can find the 1987 Live CD called "Last Nite" go for it. As a sideman, two of the all-time greatest guitar solos are LC on Steely Dan's "Kid Charlamagne" and from SD's Gaucho LP - ""Won't Take Me Alive." Also as a sideman on Stanley Clarke's "Live at the Greek".
