Hi, I'm new to this forum, and to guitar playing, but I have gotten good at playing the guitar. I need a good electric guitar or acoustic/electric guitar because my old one was my parents one. It is a classical guitar, and the kind of music I play is rock and a bit of pop... such as Muse, or Tyler Hilton, Keane, Green Day, etc. I'd prefer a electric, but an acoustic/electric would be fine. My price range is from $150 - $500 and I do not want to get a starter kit. Can someone help me pick one out? I was maybe thinking of the Fender® Standard Fat Strat® Electric Guitar - something like that.

You could gofor a squier starter kit, it comes with a 15 watt amp.
I think you can buy starter kits on the main site

Ok, on that Squire thing... Don't even go there. i have played a large variety of those things and the vast majority of them are junk. Don't even think of going for their starter kits because their horrible. My first guitar was a Squire and it drove me nuts by the first week with all the buzzing and lack of tone. If you want a guitar that's gonna be great for beginning but will last you for a long time i suggest you check out either Schecter or Ibanez. You can't go wrong with either of those. But my biggest piece of advise is to play it before you buy it. And also, you get what you pay for; you pay cheap, you get cheap. Keep that in mind. Shop around and find what you like, and by all means don't let brand names slow you down. Happy hunting.

(my apologies for the brand bashing. long day)

i was also wondering if the ibanez 2005 SZ520QM Electric Guitar was any good. it seems like it is, because of the reviews... but i want more opinions. the people who got it played the same kind of music i do, so i think it would fit me good. is there any objectiong to it?

I helped a friend of mine get started and we ended up with a Squier Telecaster and an Orange amp for just under £200.

Firefret, don't write all squiers off just because you had one that wasn't set up, they make some good budget guitars.
But you're right on one thing. Play before you buy.
Some shops will sell a guitar straight out of the box and then charge you for the set up they should have done in the first place

I wasn't writin' 'em all off. I'm just sayin' that the vast majority of them won't last you that long. Good for first time players but if you want something that'll last you ain't getting your money's worth. Although i do have to say that i am impressed by their Showmasters. I still say run with the Ibanez or even the more expensive Fender Strat. That'll last you for quite a while.

When it comes to amps, i don't have any real suggestons other than what i said before about playin' around and finding what you like. Now if you're stuck at home check out a couple of these:

Crate, Fender, Hughs & Kettner, Marshall(expensive), Peavy, Ibanez, and Randal. Check prices on those 'cuz i know some of them like to be a little heavy on the wallet but you get what you pay for.

Ive said it many of times that new fender guitars are junk...Fender lovers please dont be offended by that...Ive had nothing but crap product from them...from a 1800 dollar strat to a 100 to 200 dollar mini acoustic.

I cant comment on old fenders because I dont have one.

The Ibanez SZ520QM seems to look good...Ive read reviews about a buzzing coming from them though.

I dont like how you have to feed the strings through the back of the guitar...Why do I hate that...just in case I run out of new strings and I break a string I can use an already used string which I keep in case and it would be hard to get the old string through them holes when the end of string is twisted from tuners from when I took the string off the first time.

hey sometimes it happens.

here is a pick of the Ibanez SZ520QM

I just wanted to say Ive owned Ibanez guitars and have an ibanez acoustic right now and I like their product...it will last a long time.

Other then some reviews as regards to buzzing and the issue of how the strings are put on the guitar which is only an issue if you happen to run out of new strings and want to use an old one which you still can...it just makes it a little tougher...thats nothing though and most people wont have this issue like I do

Also not all the reviews I read said it buzzed...just a few did...all brands build a lemon or two.

At first I wasnt sure I liked the look of this guitar however its grown on me already and I can see me buying one...Its cool...I like it.
