I'm new to guitars and want to start playing, I don't want to spend a lot of money on a first guitar and am looking to get a budget starter guitar for around 150 Euro or so.

Now I realize Epiphone is made by Gibson and Squire by Fender, and I realize the debate between Gibson and Fender has been going on for a long time, but I'm not conserned with Gibson or Fender, my focus is their cheaper cousins.

What I want to know is what guitar I should get as a starter, I've never really played guitar before so I don't know what feel I like. I've read somewhere that the Epiphone Les Paul is a great starter, then I read the Squire Strat is the best starter. Or is there something else out there I should consider?

I'm a little confused and would appreciate some input from people in the know! Thanks!

The best thing I can do is recommend what Ive played and know of both guitars...I own an Epiphone Les Paul 100 and for the price its a decent guitar...I also tried the Squire years ago when a friend owned one and it was ok but not my type of guitar.

I guess its all up to how it feels and sounds to you personally...not much anyone can do except say pick the one you like better...my choice would be the Epiphone Les Paul 100 because I own one...eventually i will buy a Gibson however for now the Epiphone is good enough and solid enough for me at this point in time...I was playing a charvel/jackson however i prefer the Gibson style type of guitar.

epiphone is much better than squier. go for the epiphone les paul.

epiphone was bought out by gibson while squier was created by fender. fender also has alot of cheaper guitars. for example; the squier line (which is the bottom), then the mexican made fenders (which are not worth much either) and so on. epiphone still makes certain models gibson does not. i feel like you would appreciate the epiphone alot more and for a longer period of time.

the first guitar that i bought was a epiphone les paul. i was actually contemplating the same thing as you. but after trying them out and talking to some people it became pretty clear to me that the epiphone les paul was a better choice. i still have it and i still love it.

i've never played an epiphone les paul but my first guitar was a squier strat and i still have it. i thought it was a great beginner guitar. and now its a good one to tink around with. i would definitely recommend it. tho either is probably a good choice.

hahaha btw i just read the post above this one and realized that he said just about the opposite of what i said. i do own an acoustic epiphone and it is a great guitar so perhaps epiphone is the way to go. its all about personal preference really. like spidercents said.
