Ok, so im tryin to pick up guitar in my free time and started out with a book. learned the very basics bla bla bla. Got bored and wanted to play somthin other than "Lets go Surfin Now" so i heard Stairway to heaven was "easy" to learn. So where im getting stuck is when you have to play a chord that involves hitting say string 6 and 3 together without hitting 4 or 5. I have found no way to do this with a pick...my only solution is to use no pick and just use two fingers to strum on those chords. Is there a method where i can do these chords with a pick, becuase i like the clear crisp sound of playin with a pick. Any advice would be great, and keep in mind im a beginner . Thanks

You can use your pick and your fingers but it takes time to get it right. Hold your pick as normal then use your middle, ring and pinky finger. If your get sarting out pick some easier tunes until you get the technique down.

A chord that involves hitting say string 6 and 3 together without hitting 4 or 5 I mute string 4 and 5 so that they dont sound out.

Heres how I would play it with a pick...Lets say the X's are to mute the string...I would use my index finger on the 5...let the tip of my index finger touch the the B string muting it...I would use my ring finger to play the 7 letting my ring finger slightly touch the G string to mute it.

E-----5--------------------------
B-----x-------------------------
G-----x------------------------
D-----7------------------------
A----------------------------
E----------------------------

Can you read tab?...just wondering

I tabbed out stairway...I only tabbed each different part in the song...learn each piece and repeat when needed...I did not tab the solo.

I will be posting more songs in the future...any suggestions.

I just posted hideway by the blues breakers featuring Eric clapton...Its a cool little blues instrumental with a lot of great blues riffs.

cool, ill try that. but doesnt that give you a real nasty sound when you strum over a chord when you mute it?

Not if you play it right...it may take some practice...just dont strum hard and when strumming try to make the notes that you have your fingers on sound out more and try not to hit the mutted strings very hard...you cant really here the muted strings if played properly.
