If you have a six string the strings are
6th Low E,
5th A,
4th D,
3rd G,
2nd B,
1st High E

| Playing guitar is a experience everyone should experiment at least once in
his life. During my daily surf time in internet, i found this site about
learning guitar. It has some cool information for beginers. I hope it
helps. Learn to play

Like Brian said it can be the name of the strings.
E--------------------------
B--------------------------
G--------------------------
D-------------------------
A-------------------------
E-------------------------
It can also mean the name of chords...for example you see an E or an A when
looking in a song book with the words and chords.

Here are diagrams of how and where to place your fingers on the guitar neck
to make the chords.

Last but not least use this online chord finder...its great for normal
chords and special chords...just click the radio button to switch from
normal to special and then the site will show red dots on the image of the
guitar and show you exactly where to put your fingers and for what strings
to play...awesome for beginners.
Here is the site...
