Ok, I have just purchased a les paul kit off ebay. The guitar body has a
flamed maple top and has a clear sealed finish on it. I am thinking of
spray painting it because I have done this on another guitar body I had and
it looked nice. I was just wondering if this would effect the tone at all
and would I need to strip the clear finish off in order to put the paint
on? |

Same... That's like saying, "I want to put these $25 Wal-Mart spinners on
my Audi."
If you're only painting a thing on it and not totally repainting it, it
should affect your tone too much. But, I've found spray paint to mellow out
the guitars sound some. |

Painting the gutar will not affect your tone.
Take a look around, most guitars are painted!
If your plan on painting your guitar I would remove the original clear coat
or at least sand it so the paint holds to the old finish. If you dont ruff
up the old clear surface the paint will most likely peel away after a bit
of time.
If your guitar has a flamed top I would remove the entire original finish
and repaint it with a see-thru color most likely a dye of some type so the
falme top still shows through. Clear coat it with several layers, wet sand
and buff until you get a glass smooth finish. |
