2/16/2008 at 19:08I have a 5150 head and i am not sure to go with either a 4X12 mesa slant
cab or a 4x12 vht cabinet
i play in a really heavy metal band, and am looking for a cab that has
great low end but still punchy.
sorry if my descriptions suck.
thanks for the time
2/18/2008 at 17:10Let your ears be the judge. Have you tried both cabs?
2/18/2008 at 22:25ive tried the mesa and it sounds good....the vht fatbottom is just a bit
harder to get my hands on just to test it out
4/25/2008 at 04:16i've heard a couple of store salesmen say "use the 5150 head not with the
5150 cabinet." And maybe i'm wrong but i think for a while that's what Joe
Satriani was doing. I'd go for the Mesa...
8/28/2008 at 21:04I use the head and the cab, however i replaced 2 of the speakers with
celestion vintage 30's and it has much better tone now.
8/28/2008 at 21:35I have a Mesa .50 Caliber+ combo and I was looking for a heavy metal cab to
go with it. I tried everything in the stores and I came to the conclusion
that I would go with a Peavey 6505 cabinet (same speakers, same
construction, just the "newer" model of the 5150) and I have loved it ever
since. It has four Sheffield 1200 speakers. IMO these are some of the
best speakers ever.
Whether you are playing clean or down right melt face kind of stuff, the
harmonic balance of these cabs is untouchable.
Screw Celestions Vintage 30's and Jensens.
These Sheffields don't need to be "broken in." They always sound great.
A lot of Peavey products just don't sound good to me, but this cab just
does it for me. It makes me want to fill the cup.
I've ran a 200W L11 head through the 6505 and it reproduces cleassic tones
well too.
I'm telling you man, try a 6505. Mesa cabs are great, but you're paying
for the name mainly. They have a certain rigidity (if that's the best way
to describe my ears) and they don't breathe and punch like the 6505.
Either the 5150 or a 6505 is a great choice. I have the newer version of
the cab so I don't know if there was some change that they made to the
newer cabs versus the 5150. It's probably like a new emblem or
something.
Go try one and tell us what you think!
BTW I don't know if you know, but the 5150 and later, the 6505, are the
choice of Eddie Van Halen and customized to his taste.
