Thread: Preamp into Head?

I got a really good deal on a rack mounted guitar preamp...it was so good I couldn't trun it down. I really didn't have a need for it but I just couldn't say no.

Anyways, now I've got this thing and I'm wondering if I can run it into my head amps? I don't have a dedicated power amp as you usually would have with a pre-amp set up like this but I'm wondering if I can use the pre amp to drive my tubers?

Thanks

It can be done but your going to have level issues. I used to run a ADA into my Marshall head and it sounded like crap. I bought a power amp and solved the problem.

I agree get a power amp or you will have some impedance issues

if you have an amp with an effects loop run the preamp into the return jack. what an effects loop is... send: preamp out, return: power amp in... so, run your rack preamp into the return and u should be set... basically you are replacing your amp's preamp with the rack one. and hey, david gilmour ran a bass pre into the return of his hiwatt, so theres an example for ya.

Never heard of that. It just puts effects before the preamp section of the amp not replace the preamp just adds a preamp in front of a preamp.

Get a poweramp. A good tube one

i don't think you understood... you don't use the send from the loop at all... so you are just plugging into the amps power amp. on my amp (fender hotrod deluxe), it even says preamp out/power amp in instead of send/return

and check david gilmour's rig if u don't believe that... im pretty sure he still uses an alembic bass preamp in place of the built in hiwatt preamp.

why buy a power amp if you've got a tube power amp right in you amp (assuming you have a tube amp w/ effects loop)

Go with a power amp! I tried just about every setup and running a preamp into a head with a preamp doesn't do the trick for me.
