12/22/2003 at 20:31Just browsing around the internet and found you guys. Anyways
I been playing for about 2 years and I'm starting to get into 7th chords
because I like the way they sound. My question is what's the difference in
the 7th chords. I'm totally confused.
Thanks
Tim
12/22/2003 at 20:48Hey Tim What's up!
A 7th chord is built by using the 7th interval of the scale.
There are different 7th chords of course.
1. Major 7th chords are major chords with a added major 7th
1,3,5,7 so in G the notes would be
G,B,D,F#
G Major
----3--------
----3--------
----4--------
----5--------
----5--------
----3--------
2. Dom 7th chords are chords commonly used in blues, funk, jazz etc..
The only dufference between the major 7th and the dom 7th is a b7 instead
of a major 7th.
So in G the intervals would be 1,3,5,b7
The notes would be G,B,D,F and the chord would look like
G7
----3--------
----3--------
----4--------
----3--------
----5--------
----3--------
3. Minor 7th chords are minor chords with an added 7.
Keep in mind in a natural Minor Scale the 7th is already flatten
Unless you play a minor major 7 chord.
So in G the intervals would be 1,b3,5,b7
The notes would be G,Bb,D,F and the chord would look like
G-7
----3--------
----3--------
----3--------
----3--------
----5--------
----3--------
A Minor Major 7th is a minor chord with a major7th instead of the stanard
b7.
This should get you started in understanding what the 7th chord is. Same
applies when playing scales....
Goodluck
Thanks Brian
12/22/2003 at 20:56Thanks, that helped out alot
Pssss..
Not to be a nuance but what scales would I use?
Tim
12/22/2003 at 21:04For Major 7th chords you can use simply the major scale, major pentatonic or
even the relative minor scale. If you where playing a G major chord you
could play a E Minor Scale,Pentatonic etc....
For Dom 7th chords you can play the Mixolydian Mode,Minor Pentatonic Blues
Scale etc......
For Minor 7th Chords you can Play any Minor Scale:
1. Natural Minor
2. Harmonic Minor
3. Melodic Minor
4. Minor Pentatonic etc.......
Check out our Scale chord generators under Reference Aids
on the right side of the main page.
Hope this helps
Thanks

12/23/2003 at 14:48Hey Brian you forgot the 7th in the first example! (Major 7th)
It should be
1. Major 7th chords are major chords with a added major 7th
1,3,5,7 so in G the notes would be
G,B,D,F#
G Major 7
-------------
----3--------
----4--------
----4--------
-------------
----3--------
This is a more common approach using a Drop 2 Voicing!
