Evening,

Im just wondering how loud hammer-ons and pull-offs should be?...

If they sound quiet is it because im a bad hammer-on-er?...or because of sumthing else?...Guitar isnt about straining your fingers is it?...Yet it seems to av to launch down on the fret board to get a loud sound...

Same with pull-offs, iv been playing a while, and cz i never had a teacher (cz im stupid), im not sure if ur actually ment to flick the string a bit wen u pull off, or just lift ur finger off, and hope that there's enuf sustain left to sound the fretted note below...

Please help...

On a pull-off or hammer-on, you should be able to produce a note that's equal in volume to your picked notes that come before or after the p.u. or h.o. Here's how to do that: On a hammer-on, you don't just place your finger on the string. You HIT the string with your finger (hence the name hammer-on) with enough force to produce a note as loud as your picked notes. On a pull-off, you don't just lift your finger off the string.That doesn't produce enough volume. You push down on the string, PULL it sideways (toward the floor) and sort of let it pop out from under your finger.

I would practice them at a study volume as Gary mentioned but I wouldn't forget the dynamics either.

Dynamics:
In Laymans terms it means

How loud or soft you play to add interest to your playing.

Yeah. That's right. You should BE ABLE to make your hammer-ons and pull-offs as loud as your picked notes, but that doesn't mean you want to do that every time.
