yeah I agree it's pretty happening.

I love this album. Every song is killer. The solo on "Child in Time" is just amazing.

Telefreak - 6/16/2004 at 21:37

The only track I've heard from this album is Child in time, for that it gets top marks.
The only Deep purple album I've got is Machine head, on original 12 inch vinyl that my dad gave me.

What a guy

Telefreak,
The song "SPEED KING" really is a classic.....check it out if you ever get a chance....

Its when you listen to the classic old stuff you realise just how terrible "modern" rock is.

After a brief hiatus listening to various world jazz artists, i thought it would be fun to return to some old rock and :giggly: hell yeah!

Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple, Free, Thin Lizzy, AC/DC, Iron Maiden- modern bands like White Stripes, Oasis, The Darkness just don't compare, they really dont. They lack in every department, not just in technical ability.

I'd like to see any modern band write something as breathtaking musical as Kashmir, Child In Time, Fire and Water, Emerald, Back in Black, Hallowed be thy name etc.

They don't make em like they used to

ricoboc - 6/18/2004 at 18:15

There are some good new bands....but I guess that would be for another post...I really like GODSMACK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The only band I like from that list is The Darkness, but only because they don't claim to be anything other than an old skool rock band, they freely admit thier influences and background.
I hate the ****e stripes, and the less said about Oasis the better.
At least the Darkness have talent, you can't deny that they write some pretty rocking stuff and are pretty **** good with those Les Pauls.
I'm all for a old skool revolution, bring back the 70's, Led Zep, The Clash, AC/DC, Van Halen, all that stuff, it's great and we all know it, we just have to convince the rest of the world.

Now, where did I put my brainwashing equiptment?

Enigmatic_minstrel - 6/19/2004 at 10:15

I agree Telefreak, but alas, urban r&b, rap etc is top of most people's lists now, and those who do like rock like it to be trendy and/or "emotional" (i.e moaning about how they "dont know themselves", and need waking up "inside", yawn). I blame grunge. While the idea of grunge was interesting, it was obvious it was going to lead to this. While Van Halen, Iron Maiden etc listened to Deep Purple, Free, Led Zeppeline and took on that need for ability, todays bands had Kurt Cobain, who, lets be honest, couldnt play, had limited musical knowledge, limited vocal abilites, and a terrible tone ( sorry grunge fans, just my opinion). It is no wonder noone can play anymore!

Its all about influences.

The Blues influenced Clapton and Hendrix
- the blues, clapton, hendrix, jazz and folk influenced Zeppelin
-the blues, clapton, hendrix, jazz, folk, Zeppelin influenced Deep Purple
-the blues, clapton, hendrix, jazz, folk, Zeppelin, purple influenced Van Halen
- etc etc

but now its crap, whiny emotional grunge influenced drivel trying to be trendy.

Led Zeppelin couldnt give a F**k about being trendy or having emotional anxieties, they were too busy banging busloads of groupies, taking more drugs than most small nations and writing some of the greatest rock songs ever.

And all that without ever bothering to release a single or do TV promos

Class.

Altogether now,

"It's been a long time since I rock & rolled!" :rocknroll:

There are some great bands and very talented players on the market as I write this...DREAM THEATER with John Patrucci...perhaps one of the most gifted guitar players on the scene today...also Ty Tabor and KINGS-X...phenomenal musicians...Rock has taken a back seat to the hip-hop stuff but there are still taleneted bands to be found...

I really think a new thread should be posted...this is way off topic...

Telefreak - 6/20/2004 at 01:03

I'd like to think that the Darkness are leading a charge towards old school rock, but it won't happen. Not while there are NuMetal and emo (whatever that is supposed to be) and all the other drivel.
Until people get back into proper rock, the Darkness will be a novelty act :whatman: :4pieceband:

ricoboc - 6/20/2004 at 01:41

You guys should start a new thread for the dicussion.....

Enigmatic_minstrel - 6/20/2004 at 07:12

Nah, we've colonized this one, like rapant Vikings!

oh by the way, since when have Kings X and Dream Theatre been modern bands? both bands are over ten years old.

ricoboc - 6/20/2004 at 08:31

Dream Theater still kicking......same with Kings-X...neither band has really enjoyed populatriy over the years....White Stripes have been around forever...and their not very popular here in Chicago....same with most of the bands mentioned above.....
What a makes a band modern? Do you have to be 15 years old and have acne and play 3 chords to be considered modern? RUBISH....!!!

Enigmatic_minstrel - 6/22/2004 at 22:00

Well I have always assumed a new/modern band to be new/modern if they have emerged within the last few years (the time frame is of course subjective) with their debut album. Perhaps the best way to define modernity is to look at "trends", for example r&b has really grabbed the charts in a big way, and someone like Usher, or Mario Whinning, er I mean Wynans, although they have been around for a while, have only really recently become widespread.

In rock, the Darkness have been doing smaller club circuits for a couple of years at least. I remember reading about them in time out magazine 3 years ago, which is 2 years before their debut. But they are modern, and they aint teenagers.

So my definition of modern bands are those who have made their debut within the last 5 years. And they all suck. :giggly:

Spidercents - 8/5/2004 at 03:42

The problem with modern music.

#1 The record companies want a pretty face.

# 2 Very few people know the art of songwriting

# 3 Every generation seems to get dumber and dumber.

# 4 All the good song writers and guitarist are probably afraid to put themselves out there because the world is so criticle and will beat you down every chance they get.

# 5 Sadly the great guitarist and songwriters are probably sitting on the computer typing in a reply to some kind of guitar forum to make himself or herself feel a little bit better so he or she dosent feel like they wasted there life.

I like deep purple.Space trucking is a favorite of mine.I know its not on the album you guys were talking about.
