Guitar101 - 8/2/2004 at 03:40 So how does Jimmy Page stand on your list. Do you like his playing? Sound?
Songwriting?
chrisC - 8/2/2004 at 03:56YES I LOVE JIMMY PAGE GREATEST EVER!!!!!!!!!!!!! but umm thanks for giving
me credit for coming up with the idea for this post! nah i dont care.
JIMMY PAGE IS THE GREATEST!!!!!!!!!
Spidercents - 8/2/2004 at 04:20I like jimmy in led zeppelin. However after zep I havent liked anything hes
has done.I loved zep at one time however have worn out on it.I listend to
it way to much.Jimmy is not that great of a player live.On the song remains
the same everyone played well except for jimmy who I thought struggled
thruogh the whole concert.John bonams drums were to loud, however john
played well.John was the band.Without his drum riffs and timings 75% of
Zeps songs would never of been wrote. He brought the best out of jimmy which
nobody else has done to this day.Jimmy is a studio genious and can capture
moments on tape most of us forget to do.So hes a great player in the studio
sense.I think of him as more of a producer than a great guitar player.I
think he recorded everthing he played and had great moments that were
captured that might never come again. So for that hes great.
chrisC - 8/2/2004 at 05:02you must be a drummer! thats ok tho.
page and bonam were a great pair. which probably explains why you didnt
like jimmy after zeppelin. bonam (which i think is actually spelled bonham,
but ill continue to spell it this way) worked off of page as well. a great
example of this is"the ocean". the drums (snare especially) song fit
perfect in that song. and if im correst page came up with the opening riff
before bonam wrote the drum part. (which is usually how most songs are made
guitar part then drums)
theres a chance that when you saw zep page was drunk. they were a haevy
drinking band .bonham drank himself to death. and it sounds to me that you
are judging jimmy on his performance after zeppelin. just because you dont
liek his music doesnt mean he wasnt a great player. but this topic is
different from the one i had previopusly posted which simply asked does he
make your top 10 list. but thats ok. i love zep which is probably why im
defending page so much. that and this one dvd i saw page playing his
fingers where flying all over the palce amazing speed, and he didnt miss a
note.
o yeah i forgot stairway to heaven. dont try to tell me that the every
drummer takes time to learn the amazing drum part in that song. every
single person on the face of the earth could hum you that song. the truth
is theres no zeppelin song where the drum parts made the song or were just
real memorable, maybe rock n roll, but if you ask me that drum solo just
annoys me.
jimmy page drove zeppelin!
Spidercents - 8/2/2004 at 07:27He dosent play well live drunk or not.Drummers do learn stairway.
I like Jimmy in zep.Anything else like outrider(I think thats the name) or
whatever is not that good to me.Bohnams playing was the key to the
band.Robert Plant will tell you that.I'm not discrediting jimmy on any
riffs or licks.Like I said he probably recorded everything he did.I thought
jimmy was the greatest at one time too. However I now realize the impact
john bohnams drumming was.He was the backbone of zep.I'm not discrediting
anything jimmy wrote.I didnt say anything to make you think that.I'm not a
drummer.Guitar is my thing.Hopfully youll see the impact his drumming had
on jimmys playing and vice versa of course.John fed off of jimmy to however
the timings that john had took it to a place that no one else could. The
bass player was very good too.He dosent get enough credit.
Guitar101 - 8/2/2004 at 12:57Jimmy was very inventive and has left his mark on the guitar world. It's
all 4 that made the band not just one guy. Team work!
Spidercents - 8/2/2004 at 17:34Guitar 101 has said it best.All 4.
Out of ten I rate Jimmy like this
His Album play-# 8 to # 10 out of ten
His live playing-#bad #really bad
I cant listen to the song remains the same because his playing is so bad.I
believe I read A quote from Eddie van Halen that said Jimmy played like a
five year old when playing live.I agree.
chrisC - 8/2/2004 at 19:02i listened to botth the live and studio versions of the song remains the
same, and with an exception to some fans screaming and some extra feedback
(nothing to serious) it was the same.
jimmy page is a great guitar player 10 out of 10. anyways i think your
jealous of his performance in the song remains the same. i bet you cant
even play it.
Telefreak - 8/3/2004 at 00:38I don't mean to be rude Spidercents, but you're talking poop.
I have the most recent Led Zep DVD that covers footage from the entire span
of thier career and there's sweet FA wrong with his live performances.
I live Jimmy Page becase the best Led Zep stuff was recorded on a
Telecaster.
1.Stairway to heaven
2.Communication brakdown
3.Dazed and confused
and so on. :giggly:
brian - 8/3/2004 at 05:08Jimmy Page was great just sloppy. 4 out of 5 in my book
tattoo - 8/3/2004 at 14:32Jimmy Page? Naaahhhh. Not on my top list
I like Jeff Beck,Eric Clapton better
Zep had some cool songs though
DeepUriahZeppelin - 8/3/2004 at 14:33Jimmy Page created the most popular hard rock band ever. For that alone
he's one of the greatest.
tattoo - 8/3/2004 at 14:39Forever is a long time as someone will always come along to kick the next
guys A**
When I sit down to learn some new licks Jimmy Page has never came to mind.
How about you guys.
tattoo - 8/3/2004 at 14:48I forgot to mention he was a great song writer.
Telefreak - 8/3/2004 at 23:37Brian, he may be sloppy, but precision doesn't make you a great player
Like my nomination of Jeff Buckley, not a shredder, but still a great
player.
We need to get away from thinking of heavy metal shredding and playing fast
in general as being good.
I think it's more about communicating with the listener/audience than
technical proficiency.
But it's all a matter of opinion
chrisC - 8/3/2004 at 23:48i knew i wasnt the only one who thought jimmy page was the greatest.
spidercents lay off the drugs.
Spidercents - 8/4/2004 at 17:04Enough with the get off of drugs and your talking poop stuff. Its to passive
agressive. We all have opinions and were entitled to them.I said I liked
Jimmy(Hello)Im basicly saying the drummer and the rest of the band had alot
to do with the writing of the songs. Not every one agreed with you
ChrisC.You only here what you want to here and forget the rest.I think the
whole disscussion went over your head.Jimmy is a sloppy player.
Before you said that songs were written by the guitar player then the drums
and everything else is added.I dont think Led Zeppelins coda album was
recorded that way. They used old drum tracks of johns to make some of that
album. So your so wrong you dont even know it.
"Top jimmy rocks Top jimmy swings"Oh Jimmy" "Oh Jimmy"hes the king.
"Dont touch Jimmy,Keep your hands off of Jimmy"

ummmmmmm
Wes Montgomery a jazz player isn't sloppy how about Albert Lee a country
player he isn't a sloppy player.... on and on...
You are who you listen to. If your into Jimmy you might be sloppy yourself,
who knows we have never heard you play. I'm into notes that are in key and
clean. Sloppy is for garage bands. If you can play with heart and feel and
clean you da man. Anybody can stumble over notes. No pun intended. :giggly:
Spidercents - 8/4/2004 at 17:47I havent bought any albert lee however I am going to.I think hes really
good and I love that flashy twangy country lead guitar. Its excellent.I also
think Ricky Scaggs is an excellent guitar player not to mention all the
other instruments he plays.
brian - 8/4/2004 at 18:29Yeah Ricky Scaggs is great and very talented. Have you heard his Dobro
Player Jerry Douglas whooo man that guy gets the job done right.
I talked with Jerry in Jonesboro TN a while back ago after 4th of july
show. Very Down to earth.
Spidercents - 8/4/2004 at 19:48I dont know much about the dobro.I know a few people that play it though. It
sounds cool.I also think alan jacksons band sounds great. They have a dobro
player dont they.Whats his name or are the guys in his band all studio
musicans. There good enough to be.I like the older tunes buy alan jackson
not the new ones.Steve warener is a good guitar player too isnt he.Jerry
reed isnt bad either.
Enigmatic_minstrel - 8/5/2004 at 16:18Its all horses for courses really. Jimmy Page and Led Zep were such diverse
players, and they are rare in that the guitar isnt the major focal point of
the bands music. It was a combination of the 4. Sometimes I dont even
notice the guitar solos, as the magic of the 4 in full groove is too
much.
Kashmir, my favourite led zeppelin song, doesnt even have a solo. One of
THE great riffs, inventive bass and keyboard work from JPJ, Plant at his
wailing best and Bonzo...headpoundingly great.
Battle of Evermore too- no solo. When the Levee breaks is another song
where the guitar is just one component to the music.
Pagey could write a great solo (stairway, whole lotta love) and play really
sloppy ones. But he is perhaps the greatest rock songwriter, because,
fundamentally, he understood music and took many diverse interests in
music. He was a huge blues and jazz fan, but love acoustic and folk music
too. Not to mention the odd thunderous riff.
Not the best guitarist in the playing sense, but as he was the guitarist in
rock's greatest ever band, surely he stands atop of the pile?
chrisC - 8/5/2004 at 17:31enegmatic_minstrel. even if i had hated jimmy page your post would have
convinced me to become his biggest fan. dont forget about jimmys
originality. i cant remeber the song but my friend has this zep dvd and
jimmy is playing his guitar with a violin bow. BRILLIANT!

What the?
I never said precision made you a bad player either.
All I'm saying is that it's not the be all and end all.
The only thing I stumble over is my own feet on the way to the bar
:giggly:
Spidercents - 8/6/2004 at 00:18I dont like sloppy guitar players. It shows that they havent botherd to put
in the time on the instrument to become a clean player.Every one is sloppy
when they dont practice or at least play for a while. If I dont play for a
few weeks Im not as clean as if I been playing for hours everyday.Thats my
opinion. So if you disagree ChrisC or telefreak you know where you can go.
chrisC - 8/6/2004 at 00:21where can we go?
brian - 8/6/2004 at 02:52Telefreak I knew that would get you going. :giggly:
Spidercents - 8/6/2004 at 03:46Its payback for the lay off the drugs crack and the your full of poop
remark. You pissed me off.So like the angry little shark that you are or
might be I threw in some bait and it didnt take long for you to bite
because thats what you are all about.Remarks like yours and like the one I
just made should not be part of a friendly disscussion. And to question my
spelling of words when your messages are full of spelling errors seems odd
to me.
We can end it here if you back off on the personal attacks.
Telefreak - 8/8/2004 at 23:31Dude, I don't care about your prob;ems with ChrisC, but if you talk crap I
will tell you so.
If you take offence to that then you need to get out more and quit worrying
about what complete strangers on a forum who you will never meet think of
you.
Opinions are like arseholes, everyone's got one. :giggly:
Lighten up dude.
P.S. I don't really care what anyone thinks of me, I just speak my mind,
anyones opinions just go over my head :whoosh:
If you don't like me, I can live with that, just don't bring other people
down by arguing when you don't like what they have to say.
Brian and I may do a bit of sparring to wind eachother up, but it's all in
good fun. Chill
P.S. Brian. EVH sucks :giggly:
Spidercents - 8/9/2004 at 03:13I dont want to get in to it with you.If you dont care about my comments why
did you responed.Maybe you should chill on the comments you make.Thats all
im saying.sorry for the remark.I appologize.
ricoboc - 10/23/2004 at 07:51WOW!!! A little hostility afoot?
Jimmy had imagination. He was a great song writer first, a player second. I
think he had a bit of a drug problem, that may have added to his sloppy
playing. In the early clips I've seen of the band he pretty tight and on.
Later he did slip.
He's a fine player in my book.... I rate him a solid 4
Spidercents - 10/23/2004 at 11:37I didnt like being told to lay off the drugs and that I was talking
poop...Man this post is old...
I think jimmys studio work stands on its own...Excellent...His live playing
was bad...Everyone always says its because of the drugs and or booze...How
come they never say his creativity was from drugs and booze?...They always
blame the negative on booze or drugs...What about the creativity it
spawned?...Just say no to drugs kids.
[Edited on 10/23/2004 by Spidercents]
ricoboc - 10/23/2004 at 22:37Yea, I feel there should be a bit of respect when posting on this forum.
I'm not pointing fingers at anyone...just a thought.
Everyone has opinions, it's up to all of us to respect this. You may, or
may not agree with what someone says, but on the other hand we should all
be somewhat respectful.
Although we may not know each other in the real world, we do communicate
here, and as long as we communicate here we should keep it tame and
plesant.
I mod another site, and if we have problems with people they are blocked
for a week or two...some are banned.
Perhaps the forum mod here should take notice.
Spidercents - 10/24/2004 at 18:22I agree about the having respect and keeping things civil...I dont believe
in being ignorant(not saying any one was)just because you will never meet
this person. As far as banning goes...The admin is doing a great job.He just
exercised his views and opinions by banning a few/one person...That showed
the character of this admin and I respect and agree with his or her views.
infinite3020 - 5/10/2005 at 19:12i think if u say jimmy page is sloppy and is not good live, then i think u
might have a pole stuck through ur brain.....if u have seen the dvd they
have put out, and have listened to his solo where it is just him
playing.....he hits every note right...he's not sloppy at all.....but now
im sure he probably is since he's around 60 yrs old now, but back when he
was in his day, u can not tell me that that man doesnt deserve all the
respect he can get
Spidercents - 5/13/2005 at 06:25
Ive already gone through this argument...there is no point in talking about
poles through brains as we said in the last few posts of this thread after
all the arguments before it...keep it civil.
I wouldnt go by the sound of a DVD as your souce of how good live he
is...there is probably some studio wizardry going on in the editing
process.
Ive been a fan of Jimmy's since I started playing guitar...Even then I knew
his plying was not fluid...its choppy and I never know if he is going to
pull it off however he does but he seems to struggle to do it.
Anyway there is no point in debating this any longer...their are people who
view it your way and people who view it my way...whats the point of arguing
over it now...not saying you are arguing however the pole through my brain
was a good start however it will also be a good end...good day
infinite3020 - 5/16/2005 at 01:52i didnt mean to be mean....sorry if it sounded like that, but it's just my
opinion....i can kind of see where ur coming from but, we all have our
opinions...
tony_m_1234 - 5/18/2005 at 03:24personally I love pagey allround. For everything he has done. However i do
agree his live playing can be extremely sloppy but i dont get it. Its like
one second he is playing awseome live stuff and then a second later he is
sooo slippery. but thats just my oppinion. But sompthing he made up his
sloppiness for was his stage presence and the energy he produced. His songs
(sloppy or not) had huge inpact in the guitar world and pagey haters are
gonna have to face it becouse he is a guitar god! and hes not a god for no
reason
ricoboc - 5/18/2005 at 05:25Well Tony, I think Page had a bit of a drug problem. This was his
downfall.
He was a great song writer and at times could play lights out. But the
drugs pulled him down and didnt add to his stage presents.
[Edited on 5/18/2005 by ricoboc]
desertguitar - 5/15/2006 at 22:21I'd have to agree with some of the posters here.
Studio playing was phenomenal. Extremely clever and inventive stuff. Kids
nowadays who can actually appreciate talent, like Led Zepplin much more
than the modern garbage bands of today.
Zepplin could actually play their instruments with skill and Robert Plant
could actually sing. Compare that with today's no talent, no melody-capable
players.
In concert, he slung his guitar too low for really good technique and tight
playing and he was often chemically impaired. That didn't lead to good live
playing.
Great inventive guitarist though.
tony549 - 6/16/2007 at 06:26Page, put alot of licks down on his way to the rockin roll hall of
fame...LOL
