I've just bought an acoustic guitar for my 9-year-old daughter (from ToysRus).
The guitar advertised was a Fender DG-5 which I had read was a decent starter guitar for the price. However on opening the box the guitar is actually a Squier(by Fender) SD-3.
Have I been had? Or are they basically the same guitar? They look very similar to me.

If the guitar was advertised as one model and you got another I would say yes you been had!

Word to the wise never buy a guitar or guitar package from Any department type store. Buy from music stores! That's what we do!
We play guitars and we sell guitars.....

The part that I bolded and underlined is the part I want to cover. On the basis that if they are basically the same guitar you are probably ok. Guitars by the same brand are usually very similar (bearing in mind that shape may vary while sound/durablity does not and that acoustics are more similar on both counts no matter what model number whereas electrics are not). The sound may be a little different but you are probably more focused on durability. In that case you can take it to your local guitar store and compare it to other guitars for types of wood and thickness and see how your compares. The staff should help you when it comes tomaking a decision on whether the guitar will last or not.

On the basis of fraud you have been had. You could probably take it back, demand a refund and the correct guitar and possibly recieve both. However, I support Brian's advice, guitar stores are for buying guitars from. I hear they have very nice starter packages and guitars here.

P.S.-I originally had the codes [green][/green] and . They work on another forum with what I thought was the same code as here, can someone tell me how this doesn't work?

Hi Jeelz,

You've been had. Not of the same magnitude as walking into a Mercedes dealership and driving away with a Yugo, but yes, all the same.

The reason Squier exists for Fender(and Epiphone for Gibson) is to give people a cheap alternative while still purchasing from them. The way that they do this is by using cheaper hardware and materials in the making of the guitar. You'll get lower grade tuners, nuts and woods in a squier than you would with the fender.

In your case, it's not as big a deal, because the DG-5 is itself an entry-level guitar, so you don't have quite the difference in materials.

In short, you still got a good guitar for the same price. They just swapped a close-to-comparable model.

thanks,
json

You have definately been had man. Squire is a bootleg copy of fender and is worth about 1/4 of the fender equivalent. You should break the guitar and sue the gov.

With love,

My guess is that the people at ToysRus probably saw the Fender on it and thought it was a Fender instead of a Squier. That's how little those kinds of stores know about guitars. I wouldn't say you've been had, I think that the store didn't know the difference.. Music stores are the best to buy from..
