hi guys, im just starting guitar, and i think im gonna go for the epiphone les paul special II . lots of people say its junk, because its so cheap, but i think otherwise. the package comes with everything i need. do you guys think this is a good choice?? i only have 200 bucks. So any other choices or help would be awesome!

Guitar101 - 6/1/2004 at 02:29

Epiphones are cool not my personal favorites though.

If your just starting I would say go with it.

schwim - 6/1/2004 at 03:53

I think it would be an excellent choice for the money you have to spend.

When you've played a while and have outgrown it, you can always sell it and move up. Worry about that though, when the time comes.

Go for it!

thanks,

ok, cool! i think i will. i just got 37 bucks so i think im going to buy some better equipmwnt then in the package. im gobba buy new picks, new strap, cleaning kit, and a slide i think that should be enuff

schwim - 6/2/2004 at 13:37

Instead of a slide, use the money to pick up some extra strings. You're going to break a few at first and the guitars come w/crap to begin with.

I wouldn't go with any lighter of a gauge than 10-49. it's easier to play lighter strings when you're starting out(easier on your fingers), but the sustain's worse, and they break easier. I usually buy a 7 string set and drop the first. I think I play 12-56's.

You can still pick up a slide, just not a real razzle-dazzle one

yah i was thinking about getting strings as well, but im not really at expert at that. i dunno what gauge is.... and about the slide, if i get one its gonna be a 3 dollar dunlop stainless steel.

Being a starter I wouldn't invest too much money in your first guitar. This is gonna be know as your test model. When U pick one find one u will be comfortable with. As you improve U will upgrade probably many times throughout your playing life. The most important thing is be comfortable, and play with conviction.

I just picked up a Arbor AS320 from here for my son. Never heard of Arbor guitars before but this thing is great for the cash. Great starter guitar and beyond. I might end up playing this and save my Gibson 335. I also own a few epiphones but not to impressed with their sound and overall playabilty. I would stir clear of the cheap fenders strats their pretty close to being fire wood

That's my 2 cents worth

epiphone is a good brand, go for it
just one question if you're just starting and everything why is your name epifreak?

Telefreak - 6/9/2004 at 20:46

Maybe he thought it would be cool if he put freak after the name of a guitar :giggly:

schwim - 6/10/2004 at 01:07

maybe "epi" is short for epi or epinephrine pen. Could be he's deathly allergic to certain stinging insects, you callous, uncaring bastard...

On second thought, tele's probably right

A very nice starting guitar is the Ibanez GAX 70. It was my first guitar and I couldn't have been happier with it.

EPIFREAK - 6/10/2004 at 15:54

Fender Strats firewood!? I've had mine for 4 years and my bro had it for about a decade before that. The only damage is a chip in the bottom and that's just cosmetic. The thing produces amazing sound, are very sturdy, and have been used by ultra-famous musicians. Buddy Holly, Jimi Hendrix, Jimmie and Stevie Ray Vaughn, Buddy Guy, Muddy Waters, Jeff Beck, and Eric Clapton all played Fenders and with the exception of Muddy Waters they all played Strats (Muddy played a Tele). All my friends play Strats or are just beginning with knock-offs. Not that there aren't other good guitars but IMO Strats take the cake.

hey guys im back from europe and just went and picked up my guitar . since the store didnt have any les paul specials, i bought and epiphone LG special, which is almost the same thing. i got a fender frontman 15R amp, for 100 bucks which sounds sweet, and a nice fender instrument cable. I am ready to make music

Hi,

I started out on a Univox LP copy, and still play that guitar from time to time 20 years later. Don't worry about what anything but a straight neck, tone, and proper intonation.

If you are buying from a reputable store, they should be able to address these three critical items. If you are not sure about the store (are they helping you or just trying to close a sale), take someone along who knows a little bit about guitars.

I recently helped my sister buy a Strat for her son. It took me 7 trys before I found a good one in her price range (250.00).

Good Luck,

Bill

Telefreak - 7/12/2004 at 00:42

How is the new guitar?
Does it rock? Is it everything you want from a guitar?
We want to know :rockout:

When I started I started off my first guitar was a Squier Strat.. I actually got a pack with a squier amp, the strat, strap, tuner, extra strings and extra picks.. For $300 it was an amzing guitar that lasted me 7 years under very rough conditions.. (It tended to get really banged up when I was seven or so).. They aren't firewood, but they still don't have anything on Fender strats or other types..

I learned a lot on that guitar and I finally got a new one last week, hopefully a lot more memories on that just like my squier
