get lessons if you can afford them. If not, find a friend who plays and have them show you some basics. you can find countless lessons on the internet at places like youtube on how to do specific things. Most importantly - get a guitar! not necessarily buy, but somehow get a guitar, maybe borrowing from a friend. Don't give up!

If you wanna play, get a guitar. At this stage it really doesn't matter the quality of the guitar, just as long as it can be tuned. You will want to step up to a better instrument in the future though. I have taught and are currently teaching many beginners. I would try to get as much information as possible from many different sources such as veteran guitar players and other musicians alike. The Internet is a great source of information. It will be frustrating at times, but don't worry, with practice comes rewards. Do beware of bad habits. Many people who try to teach themselves from the start develop bad habits that become engrained in thier playing style are hard to get rid of inthe future. Ask a lot of questions. Enjoy!
