Well we all know some guitarists who are overrated...so how about some who are underrated, and not given enough credit where it's due? :rockout:

I'd say John Frusciante of the Red Hot Chili Peppers and Mike Einziger of Incubus.

tattoo - 9/13/2004 at 23:46

I would say myself

Kidding!
Really I can't think of any right now

Jdx - 9/14/2004 at 00:04

Jimi Hendrix. Why? Because he can simply never be rated high enough. His recorded output and influence in such a short period of time is utterly amazing still.

Other than that I would say David Grissom. He's played with John Mayhall, John Mellencamp, was a member of the highly underrated Austin bluesrock outfit Storyville, and the lead guitarist/band leader on the Dixie Chicks last stadium tour. Really like his style/tone and seems few people know him.

schwim - 9/14/2004 at 03:19

For sure... John plays some amazing guitar.

Spidercents - 9/14/2004 at 16:19

Malcum young...Its tough to pick one.

Courtney - 9/15/2004 at 08:44

Definitely Dave Navarro. Superb guitarist.

kickinits7 - 9/17/2004 at 04:15

I defenitely agree with Jimi hendrix and John Frusciante, Johns a great guitarist, but I never see him ranked anywhere above 100 on guitar lists. I never liked navarros style of playing.

Ozboy - 9/17/2004 at 12:14

I like The Edge. I think I like his ability to change style. He has to think in Rythm and Lead when he writes I think this is very hard to do. But the answer to this question is actually easy. It is the guitatrist who made you take up the guitar. Sambora, Satriani, Hendrix, Slash or The Edge it dosent matter it is there influence on us that is. I also like Hank Marvin (The Shaddows) too. He always looks like he is enjoying playing

Spidercents - 9/17/2004 at 14:36

Sounds good to me

RedHotChiliPepper - 9/24/2004 at 01:44

Joe Satriani is pretty underrated too. He's an amazing player, but I never hear people talking about him.

Some of the tracks off his anthology album are mindblowing. Absolutely crazy.

chrisC - 9/24/2004 at 20:24

jade puget of afi and quinn allman of the used

JohnL - 9/25/2004 at 02:14

George Harrison, Paul Simon......Paul Maccartney? (Im gonna get challenged on that one arn't I).

ziggy_stardust - 9/25/2004 at 07:56

ummm ok n00by kiddys heres some REAL guitarists /aka musicians/ youve most likely never heard of,try actually listening to something other than what you read about in tiger beat or seventeen or wtf ever you are "reading"(marvel comics?)

1 roy buchanan
2 will ray
3 glen campbell
4 andrew york
5 allan holdsworth
6 jan akkerman
7 mick rogers

i could go on....

Spidercents - 9/25/2004 at 21:56

Ive heard of Glen campell and allan holdsworth...I dont care for them...I just dont understand why you have to insult everyone to make your point. What the hell is tiger beat? Why are you talking about Marvel comics? What are you talking about. What is Ummm ok n00by kiddys?.There is no fighting in this forum so I would clean things up please...No insults.

JohnL - 9/26/2004 at 00:32

Wow your super cool because you like people and bands that nobody has heard of. That kind of bugs me when people try to be underground when they really dont like it all that much. You try to look cool by saying we all like the kind of music we do because we are being forcefed by the media. you suck, go to another forum if you are going to be like. Enough said.

P.s is "N00by" suppose to stand for Newbie? If it is then wow.

[Edited on 28/9/2004 by JohnL]

RedHotChiliPepper - 9/26/2004 at 04:33

Wow you listen to bands no one has heard of...does that make you wonderful and "nonconformist" or something?

Quit dissing and just give an opinion. Thats all we want to hear.

Arch - 9/27/2004 at 12:11

i wouldnt say satriani is underrated, he has his own section in total guitar magazine! really good lessons on technique and improvement. but yeah, he inspired me to learn after saying i would years before, first time i heard surfin with the alien i thought 'holy sh#t'! i got that album and then i realized just how good he is at taking a certain mood and making a matching song out of it (anyone heard love thing? you'll know what i mean) personally i think he's the greatest ever, even better than jimi, but i guess it's a matter of opinion. keep it chilled x

Spidercents - 9/27/2004 at 17:24

Where is ziggy stardust...Ground control to major tom...there's something wrong can you here me major tom.

vanstuben - 9/27/2004 at 22:00

I think that John Frusciante sucks. He is a horrible player. I think hes totally overated. Plus hes a loser heroin addict. Dave Navarro sucks too. Hello..anybody heard of Dave Mustaine(megadeth)??? Hes the best guitarist around and he invented thrash metal as well and he mixed it with jazz and progressive in the early 90's. Hes the most underrated guitar player out there. Satriani is good but hes a show-off. Hendrix is sorta good too. Frusciante is the worst guitar I have ever heard.

Spidercents - 9/27/2004 at 22:25

Thats the thing about guitar players or music in general...Its subjective...I think dave mustaine sucks...and wasnt he an addicted loser at one time also...All though I wouldnt equate having an addiction as being a loser...The person just screwed up thats all...Im not a big Frusciante or a Navarro fan...I guess what Im saying is it is all personal preference.I always thought dave mustaine was trying to look and act tough and his music was kind of a joke to me...He dosent look tough thats for sure...Thats my opinion...Not trying to start a fight or anything...Its just what I think...And that dosent mean much.

JohnL - 9/27/2004 at 23:24

Why has Mustaine been on every guitar magazine cover for like the past 3 months? Its getting annoying.

[Edited on 27/9/2004 by JohnL]

schwim - 9/28/2004 at 03:45

Last I heard, Dave did a melt-down on his arm, and I watched all of his guitars sell on eBay. Bid on a couple, but went way over what my piggy bank could crap.

And I just want to say that Mr. Stardust is really really REALLY cool. Really. Seriously. not kidding. I'm truly in awe of his individuality. Although I hear that his fingers smell like poop, and he doesn't like pie.

thanks,
json

ziggy_stardust - 9/28/2004 at 03:49

lol

http://www.janakkerman.nl/samples/Bonn91_Streetwalker.mp3

sigh...
please learn more about music and less about "heros"

ty

btw, jimi hendrix was a fantastic musician(aka artist) because he wasnt afraid to be himself, especially musically and he never ran with the pack, unlike all of you.BE CREATIVE,DONT BE AFRAID TRY LISTENING TO SOME STUFF/PEOPLE YOUVE NEVER HEARD OF IF YOU WANT TO HEAR SOME AWESOME GUITARISTS AND BROADEN YOUR(evidently)NARROW MINDS!hendrixs most important attribute was his creativity, cause there have been plenty who could play crazy scales and crap all around him,but none ive heard who even come close to his originality. it aint about anything but art,if it is youre just a punk...werd up b :study:

Spidercents - 9/28/2004 at 17:28

Hendrixs live playing wasnt that great in my mind...However his studio recordings are done very well...I think the producers had a lot to do with jimmys success...People think hendrix invented the backwards guitar however in all reality it was the studio guys behind the recording equipment that started that.Jimmy's live work makes me cringe sometimes.

willy - 9/28/2004 at 19:30

Ziggy, I can tell you as a fellow forum "n00by" that this is a real warm and fuzzy, let's hold hands and sing "We Are The World" site. My unsolicited advice: stop the preaching. There are some informed thoughtful people here. I thought your post was (minus the muso b*tch attitude) valid. The problem is that your point will be lost on those reacting to that attitude, not content. JohnL, for example, commented on how the "bands" you mentioned (you didn't) were "underground" (none of the guitarists you mentioned were). Jan Akkerman's solo on Focus' only US hit "Hocus Pocus", (an amazing piece) pre-dates shred by almost 2 decades, however; the "kiddys" on this site won't check it out. They'll be too busy posting about what a pretentious a**hole you sound like. And art? Well, I took up guitar cuz it made cool noises and helped me get laid. Now its relaxing after a long day at work and I play mainly for (God forbid) fun! If that makes me a punk... Oh, and one more thing Zig: since we're on the most underrated guitarists thread, how did you, of all people, forget to mention the late (I'm making the sign of the cross) 70's glam god Mick Ronson?

schwim - 9/28/2004 at 22:40

Ziggy,

We'll learn more about artists and musicians if you'll learn more about properly utilising hyperlinks.

thanks,
json

JohnL - 9/28/2004 at 23:18

willy - JohnL, for example, commented on how the "bands" you mentioned (you didn't) were "underground" (none of the guitarists you mentioned were).

What you talking about willy? I did not specifically aim that at him i amied it other people as well. I knew he was talking about guitarists and i meant people in general and im sure you know some as well. I guess my "your guitarist suck' may have been a little over the top due to the fact that it was said becausehe was being a wanker. But I stand by the rest. I dont really care what kind of guitarists you like but you had to insult everyone so you could try to feel cool, like you were on a higher level and that was uncool.

Spidercents - 9/29/2004 at 00:19

yes it is uncool...and so is Glen campbell...lol...Ziggy says"It aint about anything but art,if it is your just a punk"... I think people who are rude are punks...

ziggy_stardust - 9/29/2004 at 02:15

wah!
you all remind me of the big bullies who used to beat me up all the time.im fragile so please dont be such meanies!

have you ever heard of the phrase"dont shoot the messenger"?
i guess i should leave you all in your blissful ignorance, forever thinking
that your lame ideas and non objective and uninformed opinions matter.im sorry if i spoiled your idylic dreamchat land but theres a reality to being a musican par excellence, who just happens to be a guitarist.

i could care less what you like and what you dont like, your opinions are mostly as i said, uniformed and they will continue to remain that way probably because you(all) are (as i said in an earlier post) narrow minded.

additionally, glen campbell is probably one of the best guitarists on the planet as well as a very technically knowledgeable MUSICIAN!,cool or not.you know, prokofievs music isnt really cool, but it IS important, relevant musically, and it will be listened to and respected by the musical cognescentti A LONG TIME after megadeath and nirvana and such typical mainstream dungpiles are LONG FORGOTTEN.

FRANK ZAPPA!
STEVE LUKATHER!
STEVE MORSE!
JOHNNIE WINTER!
SKUNK BAXTER!

listen,learn,be humble

Spidercents - 9/29/2004 at 03:06

See here is the thing ziggy...I have nothing against you personally...However Frank Zappa and Johnnie winter dont mean much to me...I know who they are...However I also know they are not like you. They are cool and laid back.Maybe you can learn from them.Guitarist and music is subjective...However I can see you dont realize this...Its not about whos right or wrong ziggy...Its about co habitating with other humans...Or are you so jaded its beyond your comprehension.Like I said there is no right or wrong...If you want to be rude then I guess thats in your chemistry...However Im not that jaded.

willy2 - 9/29/2004 at 18:50

Umm, I'll get to Ziggy later (laughing too hard right now). Anyway, about hyperlinks: I'm a real low tech guy and was wondering just what the heck they are? Are they accessible with poopie smelling fingers? Are they for pie lovers only? Are they sexually transmittable? Resistant to antibiotics? You're scaring the hell out of me! Help?

JohnL, went back and re-read your post. Less sure than before about your meaning, but if I misinterpreted your comments, sorry. By the way, I am on a higher level, mass quantities of Heineken will do that to you.

Mod, couldn't log in under my old user name (was I bounced!!!?) so now you've got the second coming.

JohnL - 9/29/2004 at 19:07

Ziggy_Stardust - try actually listening to something other than what you read about in tiger beat or seventeen or wtf ever you are "reading"(marvel comics?)

Ziggy_Stardust - i could care less what you like and what you dont like.

somewhat contridicting?

This is not some 1 dimension group that autmatically busts you when you say names we may have never heard of. But you had to be all punk about it.

Spidercents - 9/29/2004 at 20:12

Links are not hard...Just got to the site you want to link...Right click on the address in the bar...Copy...Then come back in the editing process...And right click where you want to place the link...And paste...Thats it...Another way is <...a... href...=The address of website or webpage...>...you can write the name of the link in if you want...In editing there is an icon for links...press that icon and put the address in between any thing that pops up.In the href thing omit all the ... I had to put them in so as not to create an actual link.

ZeldaMentalEvil - 9/1/2005 at 09:57

I only recently started browsing these forums and have made a few posts too. But after reading through some of the threads have to admit i'm a lil scared to make inputs (or posts)......you know.....the flame and all. But hey why doesnt this thread mention Nuno Bettencourt?

Spidercents - 9/1/2005 at 18:33

I dont think Nuno has been underated...when the band he was in had all its hits back in the day he was in the guitar mags and stuff...so people knew who he was and that he could play.

Im not a huge fan of his however I did learn a lot of his tunes years ago.

ZeldaMentalEvil dont worry about putting your input into posts...If someone disagrees then I say who cares right?...As for the flaming I am guilty of that sometimes(in defence) however the administrator and moderators have put a stop these types of wars...so say whats on your mind and dont worry...this is your message board/forum too.

ibaneztotheend - 9/2/2005 at 05:53

i like clarence whight hes good even though i only seen old videos.

Gerix - 9/2/2005 at 18:44

I was just wondering if anyone has ever heard of Doyle Dykes. Maybe it's my inexperience as a guitar player, but he seems to be a terrific guitar player. However, I've never found anyone outside my family who has heard of him. I guess he does a lot of stuff for Taylor Guitars. He played a really nice piece for a ceremony to present a seedling of the last Liberty Tree to the Secretary of Natural Resources (I think that was his job)

Anyway, I've been on Launchcast seeing if I could listen to either Satriani or Vai. I know, I have to get my music from Launchcast, but I don't have a job, so I'm poor, and the local radio stations don't venture too far from the 5 or 10 "great new songs," and a few popular old bands. If only there were stations for musicians.

godofsolo - 11/21/2005 at 22:44

1. Marty Friedman
2. Jason Becker(ALS )
3. Dave Mustaine
4. Paul Gilbert
5. Buckethead(OK, but not great)
6.Yngwie Malmsteen

To name a few

ricoboc - 11/26/2005 at 00:29

In Ziggy's defense I must say that Jan Akkerman is a truly talented player. I loved his 70's fusion band FOCUS.
I'm sure some of the older players remember the song HOCUS POCUS this song was covered by Gary Hoey in the late 90's.
The Hamurger Concerto release from Focus was also a great album.

All of them are underrated and it's sad.

Shred is going under.

GuitarMuscle - 12/5/2005 at 03:39

You guys and girls forgot about the late Danny Gatton.
Awesome country guitar..

ricoboc - 12/7/2005 at 05:58

I forgot to mention STEVE HOWE from YES.

Djrog00 - 3/15/2006 at 00:03

vanstuben is the dumbest contributor to this site. How can anyone in one post rip on Satriani(show-off, try one of the most well respected guitarists for teaching Stevie Vai who isnt to bad himself ha, look at Satrianis backround Jew). He also gave Jimi Hendrix ****, said he was ok, yeah he was sloppy sometimes live, but didn't he die from a heroin overdose, he was sloppy too drugged up at shows. And Frusciante sucks, ha, I laugh at your whole post, I respect metal guitarists a lot too, just cause i dont like the music doesn't mean I hate the guitarist. Mustane is ridiculous, I just hate metal. Listen to Chili Peppers Live at Hyde Park or BSSM. I also thought Neil Young was left out, sometimes his solos were a little sloppy, but they went with the song and he wrote some good ones, guitarwise and lyrically.

FrenchCrusader - 3/16/2006 at 16:10

Im glad this got started up again, Ozboy said The Edge, but i don't agree I personaly think he is one of the most OVERrated guitarest in a highly overrated band in the world. I would say that the old folk guitarest Davy Graham is HUGELY underrated he is one of my all time favorite gutarists ever and i mention him alot when there are guitar slinger posts but he is amazing.

Frenchcrusader.

Rock on, Rock Hard and Rock Heavy!!!

[Edited on 3/16/2006 by FrenchCrusader]

FrenchCrusader - 3/20/2006 at 00:19

Ohh and the guitarist from bonjovi i hate the band but the guitarist is great. Richi Sambora or somthing like that.

hickaction - 3/21/2006 at 02:57

I began playing guitar in the 80's and if you didn't know how to shred back then, friend you couldn't play in a rubber band. I think some of the most underrated guitar players of that time are as follows...

1. Matthias Jabs/Scorpions. This guy had some of the most fitting riffs, and guitar solos for that era/a true heavy metal guitarist.

2. Glenn Tipton/Judas Priest...one of the most underrated guitarists of the 80's.

3. Alex Skolnick/ Testament... I read an article that he practiced 8-12 hours a day. He was Testament; I believe he plays jazz now. I had a chance to meet him in person in Tacoma Washington in the late 80's...great guy.

4. Dave Mustaine/ Megadeth.. In my opinion Dave was a animal when it came to creativity, rythyms, and lyrics, and the marketing of Megadeth, but he was never a very flavorful lead guitarist; I thought Marty Friedman was the best move that he ever made to further the career of Megadeth, and it showed.

5. Someone posted Malcon Young from Ac/Dc I will have to respectfully disagree. He never played a solo in his life, and all of AcDc riffs are just monotinous repeats of the same album made ten times over, but they had alot of energy.

6. Heres one to check out... This guy is from Italy, and his name is Peppino D Agostino a fingerpicking virtuoso. I found his book by accident, and fell in love with his style, energy, and creativity. Every song is fresh, and alive, his songs are fun to play, as well as challenging, he plays in about 10 different tunings, so your knowledge of the guitar is challenged in this aspect..go to his website at Minestrone music.com.

Spidercents - 3/23/2006 at 06:28

What can I say...I like ACDC's riffs...they are catchy.

To each his own I guess.

hickaction - 3/24/2006 at 02:22

I heard recently that AcDc was rated the number 5 best band ever. (I believe the poll was taken in Europe) AcDc is one of those bands that have stood the test of time. Generally when a bands lead singer dies (Bon Scott) the band has a tough time recovering from such a career blow, because when the average joe listens to an album, and they are interested in the song more then the musical ability of the band, and then low and behold someone new is in there the band generally takes a tail spin career wise.. Look at the example of Black Sabbath. But AcDc recovered and recovered well I may ad. Back in Black is one of the top selling heavy metal albums of all time. I believe it was Malcom Young that started the band...dont hold me to it But I will agree with you that they had some pretty cool songs.

1. Long way to the top...
2. Dirty Deeds
3. Whole lotta Rosie
4. Jailbreak
5. Night Prowler (Richard Ramirez's theme song...sicko!)
6. Back in Black
7. Etc.....

NectarGuru - 4/4/2006 at 01:14

MICK RONSON!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

asknoquestions123 - 11/11/2007 at 05:57

i'd have to say billy corgan, check out the song "i am one" by the smashing pumpkins and you'll see why

mirage_redption - 11/18/2007 at 02:42

My personal opinion would have to be Eric Brann of Iron butterfly he was only 17 when they released In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida and it stayed in the top forty for a whole year how many seventeen yearold guitarists have had an accomplishment like that honestly.

mirage_redption - 11/18/2007 at 02:54

oh I forgot about Steve morse from Dixie dregs if you haven't heard of him I suggest going to you tube and watching one of his videos

retroguy90 - 4/25/2008 at 04:40

Steve Clark - def leppard. (deceased) very melodic, tasteful lead guitar.

I can't believe some people are claiming Satriani and Hendrix are underrated. You're talking about two of the most acclaimed guitarists of all time.
