What guitarist have you heard or seen that did not live up to the hype.Who is over rated.

For a long time I was hearing about Eric johnson. So one night I watched him on austin city limits and I started wondering why are people writing such wonderfull things about this guy.I thought he lacked in feeling and was no better than most guitarist. So my pick for over hyped or over rated guitarist is him.

brian - 8/10/2004 at 14:40

Roy Clark is the most over rated. He makes more mistakes then not.

Spidercents - 8/11/2004 at 00:09

The old man seen Roy clark in concert recently and was dissapointed. The old man blamed his not so great performance on old age.Maybe its because he is over rated.

brian - 8/11/2004 at 01:52

He's always made tons of mistakes. He's more of a comedy act

schwim - 8/11/2004 at 02:20

I love Roy's version of Malaguena. Tons of feeling and no mistakes(on this recording anyways ).

Jack White and Kurt Cobain would be my toss-up for #1. Whoever put them in the top 100 should be hung upside down with rabid chipmunks in their boxers.

thanks,
json

christiaan - 8/11/2004 at 21:04

To Spidercents.
re: Eric Johnson
We're talking about a very talented guitarist who does at least deserve another listening to by you.
If Eric isn't as good as you think after another litening, that's fine.
However, there are other guitarists in the same rock idiom that do feel that he is a highly gifted player and is their equal. Perhaps you've heard of them......Joe Satriani, Steve Vai, John Petrucci, Paul Gilbert, Steve Morse ..to name but a few well known names. Eric is in the same league as these players.
Thanks and Regards
Christiaan

Guitar101 - 8/11/2004 at 21:55

Yeah I agree Eric Johnson can fire a guitar fretboard up. He's got his own tone. I don't like his singing though.

Spidercents - 8/11/2004 at 22:17

Thats cool that people disagree in a civilized manner.Im not say ing hes not good. However what ever tone or vibe and or feeling didnt grab me.I 'm not a big fan of paul gilbert either.Joe satriani is someone I need to listen to more to have a complete opinion on however Im not into his playing much either.I liked steve vai on the eat em smile album but didnt like the skscraper album.Steve morris I dont know anything about however used to read his columm in the magazines. Thanks

Telefreak - 8/11/2004 at 22:44

I find Eric Johnson's opinion of he self quite conceted.
The man thinks his hearing is so accurate that he can tell what batteries are in his effects pedals, He strikes me as a conceted fool.
Never heard his playing, but I dislike his attitude

Spidercents - 8/12/2004 at 05:39

I would of loved to of read that or heard it.That sounds kind of ridiculus being able to distinguish what batteries are being used in your effects.maybe he can. That still dosent make him anything special in my mind.Hey if someone wants to change my mind on him send me a tape to listen to.I will listen to it in my walkman.I think there are duracell batteries in it.I can tell by the way the volume reacts when I turn it up.(Not)

underrealm - 9/7/2004 at 05:15

I think Lenny Kravitz is way overrated... The man can't play anything past power chords yet he's got endorsements?! What's up with that? I dunno... maybe I just haven't heard him play to his ability.

I've heard people say that Yngwie is overrated, but if you guys can show me a more accurate guitarists, I'd be more than happy.

Also, I've heard people say that Kirk Hammett is the absolute best. No doubt, Kirk is a great player, and the feeling that he puts into it is phenomenal. The fact still remains that all of Metallica's songs are rather easy to play... So I'd say he's just a bit overrated. But not too much...

Spidercents - 9/7/2004 at 18:04

I agree with you completly.Lenny is a great singer however his music sucks now.I like his first album or so"we built this garden for us"stuff like that is good.Malmsteen is a good guitar player however I havent heard much of his stuff except for a few videos.Good guitar playing dosent always equate to good songwriting. Some of metallica"s faster solos can be challenging,However I always feel like Im playing a scale when I play their leads.I like their slow solos much more than the fast ones. They have some great slow guitar leads. The fast ones are ok.

RedHotChiliPepper - 9/7/2004 at 22:36

Jack White and Kurt Cobain are way overrated. Most of their music was/is power chords. Yet alot of people hold Cobain in high regard. And the White Stripes are thought of as "creative" when their music is just simple.

Spidercents - 9/7/2004 at 22:43

I never liked grunge.Music shouldnt be depressing it should lift your spirits and make feel good...It shouldnt make you want to off yourself...Music in the 90's was very depressing in the rock catagory anyway...The pop music was cheerfull though however I wasnt into pop to much...The 90's were a bust for me...music wise...Sorry...Thats my opinion.

Jdx - 9/8/2004 at 01:38

I think Eric Johnson is more obsessive compulsive than cocky. Other than the battery thing my favorite story about him is he supposedly rewired his entire house because he thought the wires/plugs were sucking away his tone in his home studio. He may need to sit on the couch for awhile but definitely not overrated.

Spidercents - 9/8/2004 at 02:24

Its all personal preference...I dont like his playing...hes good however his music doesnt do much for me...I can say that about alot of guitarist...they might be good however I dont dig their vibe so to speak...joe satriani is another one I dont care for...Hes excellent however his music doesnt grab me...Its all personal preference.

Spidercents - 9/8/2004 at 02:26

I was wondering who you thought was over rated Jdx.Do you have any guitarist that you find over rated. Thanks

Ozboy - 9/10/2004 at 06:52

This is a easy one the answer is JOHN MEYER. If ever anyone who called himself a guitarist should put his Fender away it is him. The best place to listen to his music is in its naural habitat THE ELEVATOR. I heard this guy being hyped up as the next big thing in guitaring and then listened to his album. Dont take valium Doctors just prescribe 10 minutes of John Meyer.

Spidercents - 9/10/2004 at 08:00

I liked his very first song he came out with...Then I heard the rest...What a strange singing voice...Its like he has the dry heeves or something...It sucks.

Arch - 9/12/2004 at 12:39

i'd agree that eric johnson is in the same league as you put it, but he isn't as good, judging by his solo projects, they don't really compare to som of vai's or satch's stuff. but i guess it's more opinion based than facts, whatever sparks ur biff!

Spidercents - 9/12/2004 at 13:53

I think I would of listened to more satch if he teamed up with a great singer...I like singing in my songs...Guitar is cool however I like singing just as much if not more...didnt satch sing on some of his records...I remember him singing in a song.

RedHotChiliPepper - 9/12/2004 at 18:11

I think I disagree on the John Mayer issue. His album may be more pop rock than guitar stuff, he's actually a really good blues guitarist. He even went to Julliard.

Spidercents - 9/12/2004 at 19:16

I hav'nt heard any great guitar playing from him...So I dont agree with you however every one is entitled to their opinion.

willy - 9/12/2004 at 22:19

The usual guitar "geek speak." It ain't about complexity, it's about tunes, and Jack White, Curt Cobain, and John Meyer have got loads of um'. So go back to your bedrooms, run your scales, stack your triads, cop all the Yngwie licks you can, blah blah blah, and down the road, when nobody wants to listen to you, re-read this post. Peace...

Spidercents - 9/12/2004 at 22:45

Well maybe you should try reading the post now...The post asks who do you think is over rated...Are you calling everyone geeks here...I dont get what your saying...Im usually nice to new members however calling some of our members geeks...You are so off base.I never liked nirvana...Its depressing...And so are you.

[Edited on 9/12/2004 by Spidercents]

willy - 9/13/2004 at 00:21

Depressing? Well, so is a broken heart, but with the right lyrics, and a few cool cords, it can become a thing of beauty. Maybe I should re-"read the post?" Umm..., nobody knocked Jack White, Cobain or Meyer? Heed your own advice. "Are you calling every one here a geek?" As this is not a forum for personal attacks the answer is a resounding no, but in your case (should the moderator allow) I'll make an exception. Don't concern yourself with being "nice" to me badass, I can take it. So who's over rated? Like, Richie Sambora for sure dude! Shallow enough for ya? Geez, lighten up...

Spidercents - 9/13/2004 at 06:16

What was the geek remark...Thats what got me...you can talk about other things in this post. Some of us thought that john mayer guy sucked...you dont think he sucks...so give your opinion and move on...Its the personal comments like geek that I wont tolerate in this forum...I dont care if you can take those kind of remarks and not have them bother you...It bothers me...And after putting our views down and are opinions down you dont even leave your opinion to what the post was all about...I mean your to quick to attack people...less anger and more thought in your posts would be greatly appreciated...you start throwing punches and no one even knows who you are.Not to classy in my book.

schwim - 9/14/2004 at 03:28

Our friend Willy did state his opinion. In a post entitled "Who is the most over-rated guitarist", he stated that it matters not of their playing ability, but their ability to make a tune catchy. Therefore, we are geeks and should practice, and he's really cool and really likes Richie Sambora A LOT. So in his reply, he made the topic a non-topic, letting us know that our topic is to him what kidney stones are to some; just something we hear about but will never understand first-hand. Oh, and he's a tough guy(I got that from the badass name drop. That one really cinched his cool factor w/me). He's letting you know that he wouldn't piss on you if you were on fire, and he could probably beat up your dad. I sincerely doubt that he likes pie.

I may be off on that last bit, but he doesn't seem like a pie lover to me....

Kurt and Jack made catchy tunes. They suck(ed) as guitarists.

thanks,
json

Spidercents - 9/14/2004 at 07:30

I find it hard to read willys post...conveying one thought at a time is important when writing...Willy still hasnt said what the geek remark was...Basically willy is saying if the moderators would let him call us names he would...He wants permission to be a...well I wont say it.Willy calls us names and then says lighten up...Is that how willy acts in real life...Is this how you greet someone...

willy - 9/14/2004 at 16:20

No pie? Are you "throwing punches"? Are you "attacking" me on an international forum? Wait till Spiderman, oh, sorry, spidercents finds out about this! Bet he'll brow beat you too. Anyway, based on your post, I'm not so sure you've got me figured out (Sambora does suck), but I do see a sense of humor and some active brain cells (what a relief). Exactly: Jack White, Cobain, Meyer, Kravitz are(was a) great singer/songwriter/performer/musician(s) who happen(ed) to play guitar. Love um' or hate um' they shoudn't have been included in this thread let alone dissed. json, YOU GET IT. By the way, I'm in pretty good shape, but at 5' 10", 155 LBS, I'd say it's safe for you dads to come out of hiding, the coast is clear. "Doesn't like pie," why I oughta...

Spidercents - 9/14/2004 at 17:03

brow beat you?...What does that mean?...

Spidercents - 9/14/2004 at 17:05

.I think you pre judged some of us because of a usermane such as spiderman...oh I mean spidercents...Your wrong pal and I think your being cocky

Fighting In a guitar forum is like winning the special olympics...No matter who wins your still retarded.

(no offence to retarded people)

Spidercents - 9/14/2004 at 18:03

I know that last post was a little harsh and I didnt want to say it...Willy If you apologize for the geek remark then this feud can stop and we can get on with being a happy forum community again...Thats all I want is a retraction so to speak.

willy - 9/14/2004 at 18:22

"200 pounds"? "Crush me"? "Like a bug" no less (off topic, be careful of that mind set). Wow! Guess I was right about the badass thing. Congratulations: you've just made an ass of yourself on the world wide web. Anyway, the rather innocuous (buy a dictionary) phrase "guitar geek speak" was merely a reference to those who have been consummed by the mystery and machinations (dictionary again) of their instrument at the expense of making music. Just my opinion of course. Clear now? Oh, and "brow beat" (that's in the dictionary of American slang) means to scold and/or nag incessantly (dictionary again?). My friend, the only one fighting on this thread is you, and if that makes you "retarded" than you said it not me. "Cocky"? There's a big difference between being sure of one's self and full of one's self. Contrary to what you may believe, I know the difference. Do you? (sorry for any typos, I'm 5 Heinekens down)

Spidercents - 9/14/2004 at 18:55

Those who use words that others dont know to sound smart are usually the ones who arent smart.

You might think calling people geeks is harmless but I think your wrong.

If you dont think your fighting you are retarded...What do you call this fued were having...I cant believe the crap your spewing.

willy - 9/14/2004 at 19:20

I mean this sincerely: what is your age and level of education? No "crap" no "punches" on my part. This may clear a few things up for me. I promise no cheap shots. Please reply.

Spidercents - 9/14/2004 at 19:35

I dont see how that is relevent...I know what you meant by guitar geeks...your saying that guitar geeks are the guys learnig all the scales and triads and everything else about guitar...your saying that it is harmless to say that guitar players like these are geeks...I dont think they are.

the first couple of post you made were not clear and people were having trouble understanding what you meant exactly...I know that you called some of us guitar geeks...And thats not cool.

[Edited on 9/14/2004 by Spidercents]

Spidercents - 9/14/2004 at 20:26

I was waiting for a reply also.

willy - 9/14/2004 at 20:34

It's relevant because if you're a young high school kid I don't want to continue ripping into you. Fair enough? If you (and json) go back and read (really read) what I wrote, you'll see that I never, NEVER (accept you of course) called anyone on this thread a geek. You misinterperated "guitar geek speak" (which I clearly defined) and took it personally. People on this thread made what I thought were some stupid comments and maybe I got a little rough. That IS me being cocky. I've also got to say that it's remarkable that you never responded to any of the music related points I made. What does that say? I don't know. Json did (Jack White "sucks" as a guitarist), and you know, I disagree with him. I think loud, simple, sloppy, distorted, overdriven sh*t is cool sometimes. But that's just me talkin' out my ass...

Spidercents - 9/14/2004 at 21:16

I was giving my opinions on players...I said i havnt heard john mayer play any thing good...So I disagreed with someone...Then you posted the usual guitar "geek speek"...Ive been playing guitar for over 20 years and I know alot about guitar playing...And im sure as hell not going to let someone say im a geek.I dont care if it wasnt directly at me or not.I know what your intent was...The comment about learnig all the triads and stuff pissed me off also...

I gave my opinion on grunge which would involve cobain...I think grunge is depressing...Thats a comment and or a opinion.Waiting for a reply...peace...And have a cold one on me...A beer that is...Not a cold comment.

willy - 9/14/2004 at 21:42

In terms of technique and guitaristics, Mayer's no Satch (not by a long shot), but 10 times the song writer and performer. I've seen Satriani (recently). Interesting, but yawn... As for Cobain? I was never a Nirvana fan either, but would never question their impact on the scene nor their body of work. Depressing? Some of the greatest books, movies, paintings, songs, women, are. Spider, bet you can run phrygian in 5's that would impress your friends, but can you pick up an acoustic and put a smile on my face? That ain't over rated.

schwim - 9/14/2004 at 21:53

wow, you two made my day.... don't you guys work? I don't have the time to disagree with people this much.

@Willy(badass)Nilly.. I didn't say I didn't like jackie and Kurtis. I love their music(Kurt's more, but I can handle some Stripes. It's the whole retro-retard movement that gets to me). The comment I made never had anything to do with what I thought of their music. Just that I thought neither of them should have ended up on Rolling Stones 100 top guitarists. They should be two slots above me, and that puts them really REALLY low on the list.

Here's the way I figure it.... If I can duplicate everything you've played in public with more clarity in the case of your live performances, then you sir, suck. Why? Because I suck. Hence, if I can play better than you, then you suck worse than me. I suck a lot.

I wouldn't know a triad from a triangle. I've had passing acquaintances with scales, and I've met a chord once.

Good writers and composers, yes. Good guitarists...hayles no... It's not heart and soul you hear in their songs. That's distortion, a guitar out of tune and in the case of Mr. White, asinine 70's reverb.

willy - 9/15/2004 at 17:51

"... don't you guys work?" Can't speak for the spider, but as for me, I've been posting from prison. Just kidding... On vacation actually. Sittin' in a 24/7 free internet cafe in Tokyo that sells the most expensive Heineken on the planet. Quickly: As someone who never chats and rarely posts, I often forget that with strangers, you need to be careful , not only of what you say but how you say it. Most of what I wrote was done so with sarcasm, a big smile, and way too much beer, but after re-reading the exchanges, I did kinda, sorta, come off as an arrogant little prick. Sorry for the negative vibe. Apologies all around. Cheers...

Spidercents - 9/15/2004 at 19:09

Im sorry too.

schwim - 9/15/2004 at 21:57

I feel a hug coming on.... wait..... nope, just gas....

Is the purple haze still in Tokyo?(about 2 blocks from the Hard Rock & McDonalds? If so, they should still remember me

You sir, are indeed a prick, but you do it very well, so you are embraced by the community...

thanks,
json

willy - 9/16/2004 at 21:21

Spider, I..., I love you man. Seriously, the only reason I held back on the super sh*t (I am a prick) is because I can tell you're a nice guy. Thanks for accepting the apology. Schwim, Mr. "I wouldn't know a triad from a triangle." I've met guys like you and I know you're fibbin' a little. Based on that comment, I also know I suck way more than you. I've asked my friends about "Purple Haze" and gotten a blank stare. Are you actin' funny and don't know why? It might just all be in your brain. Anyway, the Internet cafe I'm posting from is in Shinjuku. Been hanging out in Shibuya during the day (love that place), and Ropongi at night (lived in Bangkok for 2 years, so ah, yawn). Where the f**k is the HR Cafe? By the way, do you truly have a community here, and are you the gate keeper or...? (moderator: this post [and thread] has gotten a bit off topic, but please allow. Thanks.

schwim - 9/16/2004 at 22:23

I can't stand all the ****ed love in the room! Someone stop me before I hug again!

The HR might not be there anymore.. This was in '94. I was stationed at Mt. Fuji, and we used to take the train down and stay at the U.S. Gov't hotel. I recognize all the names you mentioned, but I can't picture much anymore(even if it hadn't been that long ago, I was drunk 99% of the time I was there, and the other 1% is highly questionable). The purple haze was a dive on the second floor across from the HR(above a fish place). A guy out front used to sell what looked like fried sheep's balls. they didn't taste half bad, but it's hard to wrap your mind around that kind of food. Anyways, back to the Purple Haze; I got drunk and fell out their front window while dancing w/ a local. They ran downstairs to make sure I was still alive, and upon confirmation that I was fine, bought me drinks for the rest of the time I was there that week. However, being as resourceful(and cheap) as I was, I showed up there the next weekend thinking I could get primed cheap, but alas, they felt their debt to society was paid.

RE: gatekeeper. I'm not the gatekeeper, but I play one on tv

RE: not sucking: If Jerry Garcia had been missing 9 more digits on his hands, he would play as poorly as I do.

you may pass,

Ozboy - 9/17/2004 at 12:07

I cant believe a joke like John Meyer started all these problems. Maybe we should go back to trashing Cobain or White. What about Steve Stevens??

I hate JOHN MEYERS music and his voice in fact everything about his music just rubs me the wrong way and when I saw him on a clapton guitar festival on PBS I got angry. But then I heard him play. The boy can play. He ripped out some old school blues playing a seperate bassline and melody he's got chops. And then he went into some of his own stuff and I wanted to vomit.

1. It's Kurt Cobain, not Curt Cobain
2. All of those guitar players suck
3. Yngwie Malmsteen would pwn you and all your crappy power chord playing guitarists.
4. John MAYER is not that great
5. Jack White can't play as good as a quadrapaligic.

LolaReef - 11/22/2005 at 12:28

Jimi hendrix is bloody over rated. I didn't know what all the fuss was about in the 60s and i still don't know now.

ERIC CLAPTON !

docc - 11/27/2005 at 14:43

Over 40 years practicing pentatonics - that's not enough for being guitar got.Average playing skills applied to a commersialy successful music styles, could make you a commersial God,but not a guitar playing one.

ricoboc - 11/27/2005 at 18:18

Not to mention Erics playing is flat out boring and his song writing skills are under-par.

docc - 11/27/2005 at 19:36

I do not discuss the song writing or vocal skills,or anything else about E.C.,but his guitar playing.I find it mediocre and it is just a step away from being boring.

Good luck.

McKee_Wannabe - 1/20/2009 at 17:04

Yngwie Malmsteen...Yeah hes fast but NO EMOTION!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!grrrrrr
