8/10/2009 at 20:35I recently bought a strange amp from a local antique shop. It's got a
"Supernova" emblem on it (not to be confused with the Star Supernova
practice amp), but I'm pretty sure it's a one-off, custom model. It's got
two channels, with two inputs for each channel, and a "stereo" input (five
inputs total). It has a switch for polarization, but it also has a three
pronged power cable, which looks to be original. The knobs make a
substantial amount of scratching and crunching when turned, so I assume
that the pots just need to be cleaned/replaced. It's got 6 pre-amp tubes
(most of which are GEs), and two power tubes, both of which are GE model NL
188-5 made in 1984, as far as I can tell. Now, I'm really enjoying the
sound of the amp (esp. the Tremolo) and it looks cool, but it doesn't get
terribly loud. Since the amp was probably a one-off, it's essentially not
labeled at all. Is there any way I can find out what wattage this amp is
designed to handle, thus figuring out whether the tubes need to be replaced
or that maybe it's just not designed to get louder? Many thanks in advance
for your help, and I'll try to answer any questions you have.

within the day.
8/11/2009 at 16:21Great looking amp. I'm guessing came from the late or mid 70's. I noticed
the speaker says Marlboro. I used to own a small PA with the name Marlboro
years ago.
I'm thinking the company marlboro had something to do with this amp maybe
an employee creation? Marlboro amps were offered years ago from Montgomery
Ward catalogs kinda like Silver Tone guitars in sears catalogs.
With 2 power tubes it 50 watts or less.
